monday.com and ClickUp are both work management platforms with automation and AI built in, and both let you start on a free plan. monday.com organises work on flexible visual boards, with 200+ templates, automation and integration actions that scale with your plan, AI credits on paid tiers, and AI agents that take on parts of a workflow.

ClickUp tries to replace several tools at once: tasks, docs, chat and meetings in one workspace. It offers 100+ ready-made automations, an AI builder where you describe an automation in plain English and edit the triggers and actions it creates, AI custom fields for summaries and updates, and ClickUp Brain across the whole workspace. The difference is philosophy: monday.com favours clarity, ClickUp favours having everything in one place.

Our verdict

monday.com leads for most teams because it is easier to roll out. Boards are quick to understand for people outside the project team, automations read like simple sentences, and non-technical departments such as marketing, operations or sales can build their own workflows without a dedicated admin. That makes adoption, the usual reason these tools fail, much less of a risk.

ClickUp is the better pick if you want one tool instead of several and are happy to invest time in setting it up. Teams that would otherwise pay for a separate docs app, note taker and project tool get all of them in one place, with a generous free plan to start, and the AI automation builder lowers the barrier to building workflows. The breadth can feel overwhelming at first, so plan a short setup period.

Both offer free plans, so trial each with one real workflow before moving the whole team.
