All of these providers publish apps for both mobile, and one subscription covers your phone alongside everything else you own. What separates them is how many devices that is, what the logging policy says, and the price once the introductory term ends.

One plan, several devices. The phone is rarely the only thing on the account, so the simultaneous connection limit is the first thing to check: Surfshark and Private Internet Access allow unlimited, NordVPN and Proton VPN ten, ExpressVPN eight, CyberGhost seven.
A modern protocol costs noticeably less battery than the older ones, which is what makes leaving a VPN connected all day realistic on a phone. If you only want protection on untrusted networks, most apps can connect automatically on public wifi and stay off on your mobile network.
The same provider often ships slightly different features on each platform, and mobile in particular limits what a VPN app may do in the background. Reconnect behaviour after the phone sleeps is the practical difference to look for, and it is the thing we weigh most heavily.
Buying through an app store is convenient but usually more expensive than subscribing on the provider's own site, and it can make the refund window harder to use. Check both prices before you tap subscribe.
On public wifi it is worth having: it encrypts traffic others on the network could otherwise observe. On your mobile network the case is weaker, which is why most apps can connect automatically on wifi only.
