BetterHelp is an online therapy network of licensed psychologists, counselors, marriage and family therapists and clinical social workers. After a questionnaire it matches you with a provider, and you can talk by messaging, live chat, phone or video. Switching therapist is a request away. BetterHelp states that its providers do not prescribe medication.

Regain runs on the same model but is built for relationships. A couple shares one account: written messages are visible to both partners and the therapist, and live sessions of about 30 to 45 minutes bring all three together by video or phone, even from different places. Either partner can book an individual session for anything they want to say privately. Its therapists hold the same kinds of US licences with at least three years of experience.

The difference is who the therapy is for: one person, or a relationship.

Our verdict

BetterHelp is our first pick for most readers because most people looking for online therapy want help with their own stress, anxiety, low mood or life changes, and BetterHelp's large network and four ways to talk make it easier to find a therapist who fits and to change if one does not.

Choose Regain when the relationship is the reason you are seeking help. The shared message room and joint live sessions are designed for two people working on the same problem, and the option of a private individual session keeps space for things one partner is not ready to say in front of the other.

Neither service is for emergencies. Both tell anyone in crisis not to use the site; in the US you can call or text 988 to reach a trained crisis counselor. The National Institute of Mental Health suggests starting with your primary care provider if you are unsure what kind of help you need, and that is good advice before choosing any platform.
