Our verdict
This Foxit PDF Editor review looks at one of the longest-standing alternatives to Adobe Acrobat, and the conclusion is straightforward: for businesses and regular PDF users, Foxit delivers most of what Acrobat does, in a familiar Office-style interface, with an unusually strong set of security and redaction tools. It runs on Windows, macOS and the web, the Editor+ plan adds mobile apps, e-signatures and AI-powered redaction, and Foxit still sells a one-time perpetual licence for people who would rather not subscribe.
The downsides are mostly about fit. There is no free version of the full editor, the most interesting extras sit in the more expensive Editor+ tier, the perpetual licence leaves out the AI and cloud features, and casual users may be paying for far more than they need. For anyone who edits, protects and shares PDFs as part of their job, though, Foxit is one of the best-equipped editors available, which is why we single it out for its advanced security tools.
NerdBible did not run a hands-on trial for this review. It is an editorial assessment based on Foxit's own product, pricing, security and trust pages and on the published findings of independent outlets, which we credit and link below.
What is Foxit PDF Editor and who is it for?
Foxit is a long-established PDF software company whose free Foxit PDF Reader is widely used. Its paid editor, described on the Foxit PDF Editor page, is an AI-powered tool for creating, editing, converting, signing and managing PDFs on desktop, in the browser and on mobile. Foxit says it is used by more than 700 million people and hundreds of thousands of organisations.
It suits:
- Office workers and professionals who edit PDFs every week and want something that feels like Microsoft Office.
- Legal, finance, HR and healthcare teams that need reliable redaction, document sanitising and permission controls.
- IT departments rolling out an editor to many staff, thanks to an admin console, volume licensing and standard installation images.
- Mixed Windows and Mac teams, since both desktop apps and a web editor come with every subscription.
Occasional users who need to fill in a form or merge two files a month are likely to be better off with a free tool.
Key features
Editing that behaves like a word processor
Text in a PDF is usually split into many separate boxes, which makes editing awkward in most tools. Foxit's Link and Join Text feature lets you connect boxes so text flows from one to the next. TechRadar singled this out as the reason Foxit gets closer to word processor editing than most rivals, and PCWorld described the editing as intuitive. Spell checking, font and paragraph controls, image editing and page tools such as reordering, splitting, bookmarks, headers and watermarks are all included.
Conversion and OCR
According to Foxit's pricing and plan comparison, both plans convert to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint, create PDFs from any application that can print, run OCR to turn scans into searchable PDFs, compare two versions of a document, and produce PDF/A files for archiving. ZDNET found Foxit's OCR excellent and its text recognition on par with Adobe's.
Forms, collaboration and signing
You can create fillable forms, add JavaScript to them, and collect group feedback through shared links with activity tracking. The comment tools include sticky notes, callouts, text markup, drawing tools and stamps. Editor+ adds Foxit eSign with an annual allowance of signature envelopes, so you can request signatures and track who has signed.
Security and redaction
This is where Foxit stands out. PCWorld describes several redaction methods, including Whiteout and Mark for Redaction, and a sanitise tool that strips hidden data such as metadata, links and bookmarks. Documents can be protected with passwords and permissions. Editor+ adds Smart Redact, which uses AI to find and remove names, addresses, ID numbers and other personal data automatically, with reusable redaction profiles for repeat jobs.
AI Assistant and document management
Every subscription includes Foxit's AI Assistant with a monthly credit allowance for summarising documents, answering questions about them, fixing spelling and grammar, and building clickable outlines. Foxit says its document management system, with version history and check-in and check-out locking, is included with PDF Editor and Editor+ subscriptions. Integrations cover Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive and Salesforce.
How much does Foxit PDF Editor cost? Plan structure explained
Our page shows current prices from our data, so this section explains the structure only. Foxit sells two subscription tiers for individuals and businesses:
- PDF Editor covers professional editing on Windows, macOS and the web, conversion, OCR, forms, comparison, security, the document management system and the AI Assistant with a monthly credit allowance.
- PDF Editor+ adds the iOS and Android apps, Smart Redact, Foxit eSign and the rest of the advanced features.
Subscriptions are annual, either paid in full or billed monthly across the year. Organisations buying 30 or more licences get volume discounts, and students and educators receive an education discount at checkout. Foxit offers a 14-day free trial of Editor+.
Foxit also sells a perpetual licence for a one-time price. According to Foxit's product page, the perpetual version includes full editing, conversion, OCR, forms and security, but not the AI Assistant, Workspace, Smart Redact, the document management system or cloud features. That makes it a good fit for someone who wants a classic desktop editor and nothing else.
Is Foxit PDF Editor safe and secure?
Foxit's Trust Center lists a SOC 2 Type 2 report, support for GDPR, HIPAA (with a Business Associate Agreement where applicable), US Trade Agreements Act requirements and accessibility standards such as Section 508. It describes AES-256 encryption, role-based access controls, a secure development lifecycle and routine vulnerability scanning, and publishes uptime information on a public status page.
Foxit also runs a security page with security bulletins and a way to report vulnerabilities, which matters because PDF readers and editors are a common target for malicious documents. Keeping the app updated is the most important habit for any PDF software.
One nuance is worth knowing. Smart Redact is a cloud service: Foxit says it is hosted on Microsoft Azure with AES-256 encryption and that files are deleted after redaction, and it comes with a document quota that can be topped up. Organisations with strict rules about where documents may be processed should check whether cloud redaction is acceptable or stick with the manual redaction tools on the desktop.
What could be better
- No free tier for the editor. TechRadar notes that there is no free version of PDF Editor, only the trial and the separate free reader.
- Mobile apps cost more. The iOS and Android apps are part of Editor+, not the base plan.
- Webpage conversion can fail. TechRadar hit errors converting complex websites to PDF.
- Perpetual licence is limited. It leaves out AI, cloud and document management features.
- Annual commitment. Monthly billing is an annual plan paid in instalments, not a month-to-month subscription.
- Overkill for light use. Casual users pay for many tools they will never open.
Who should choose something else?
If you edit a PDF only now and then, a free reader or the PDF tools in your operating system may do the job. If you need the absolute standard that every client and printer expects, some businesses still prefer Adobe Acrobat for compatibility. If your main need is converting documents on a single computer at the lowest one-off cost, a simpler editor with a lifetime licence may be better value. And if your team works mainly on phones and tablets, compare mobile apps before choosing, since Foxit puts them in its higher tier.
Is Foxit PDF Editor worth it?
For business users, yes. Foxit combines strong editing, dependable OCR, thorough redaction and clear compliance documentation in an interface that most Office users can pick up immediately, and it costs less than the market leader for comparable features. Pick PDF Editor if you work on Windows, Mac or the web, Editor+ if you need mobile, e-signatures or AI redaction, and the perpetual licence if you just want a desktop editor you pay for once.
What other reviewers found
- TechRadar called Foxit PDF Editor one of the most versatile editors it had reviewed, praising the linked text boxes, the clean interface and redaction tools, but found webpage conversion unreliable and suggested casual users look for something cheaper.
- PCWorld described it as a fantastic Acrobat alternative for business users, with an Office-style ribbon, robust collaboration tools and a strong security toolkit including redaction and document sanitising.
- ZDNET named Foxit PDF Editor+ the best Adobe alternative in its buying guide, praising OCR on par with Adobe and a well-organised e-signing dashboard, while noting that large files upload slowly on mobile.
Where the outlets agree and disagree
The outlets agree strongly on Foxit's core qualities: it is a genuine Acrobat alternative, its editing is among the best in the category, its OCR is excellent and its security tools are a real strength for business users. All three see it as a product for people who work with PDFs regularly.
The differences are about detail and value. TechRadar is the most cautious on cost for casual users and the only one to report problems with webpage conversion. ZDNET is the most enthusiastic about the e-signature side of Editor+. The outlets also report different trial lengths: PCWorld mentions a seven-day trial for both plans, while Foxit's pricing page, TechRadar and ZDNET describe a 14-day trial of Editor+. The vendor's page is the reliable reference for current terms.
For a buyer, the takeaway is to decide which tier you need before you look at the price. If redaction, signing or mobile editing are on your list, Editor+ is where Foxit's reputation is earned. If not, the base plan or the perpetual licence covers the editing that every outlet praises.
Frequently asked questions
Is Foxit PDF Editor better than Adobe Acrobat?
For many business users it is a close substitute at a lower cost. Independent outlets including PCWorld, TechRadar and ZDNET describe it as one of the best Acrobat alternatives, with comparable editing, OCR and security tools in an Office-style interface. Acrobat remains the reference standard and some organisations prefer it for compatibility. The best way to decide is to run both trials on your own documents.
Does Foxit PDF Editor have a one-time purchase option?
Yes. Alongside its annual subscriptions, Foxit sells a perpetual licence for a one-time price. According to Foxit, the perpetual version includes full editing, conversion, OCR, forms and security tools, but not the AI Assistant, Workspace, Smart Redact, the document management system or other cloud features. It suits people who want a traditional desktop editor without recurring payments.
What is the difference between Foxit PDF Editor and Editor+?
PDF Editor covers editing on Windows, macOS and the web, conversion, OCR, forms, document comparison, security, document management and the AI Assistant. Editor+ adds the iOS and Android apps, AI-powered Smart Redact for removing personal data, and Foxit eSign with an annual allowance of signature requests. Choose Editor+ if you edit on mobile, collect signatures or redact documents regularly.
Is Foxit PDF Editor secure enough for sensitive documents?
Foxit's Trust Center lists a SOC 2 Type 2 report, GDPR support and HIPAA alignment with a Business Associate Agreement where applicable, along with AES-256 encryption and access controls. The editor includes password protection, permission settings, several redaction methods and a tool that strips hidden data. Note that Smart Redact runs in Foxit's cloud, so check that cloud processing fits your organisation's rules.
Does Foxit PDF Editor have a free trial?
Yes. Foxit offers a 14-day free trial of PDF Editor+, which includes the full feature set so you can try editing, conversion, redaction and signing before you pay. Foxit's full editor has no free tier, but the separate Foxit PDF Reader is free, and Foxit says even Reader accounts get a monthly allowance of AI credits. For occasional viewing and simple tasks, that may be all you need.
