IONOS review: our verdict
This IONOS review looks at one of Europe's largest hosting companies, the business that used to trade as 1&1, and asks whether its web hosting is a good home for a small business or personal website. For most small sites the answer is yes. IONOS combines low entry costs, a free domain and SSL certificate, daily backups, malware scanning, a 99.99% uptime promise and something few budget hosts offer at all: a named personal consultant and round-the-clock phone support. Its own data centres in the US and Europe also make it a natural choice for buyers who care where their data lives.
It has clear weak spots. Independent testers found its shared hosting slower than the leaders, the entry plan is thin on extras, and the proprietary control panel is less familiar than cPanel. For a high-traffic or speed-critical site there are better choices. But for a small business that values support, security basics and European infrastructure at a low price, IONOS is a strong pick, which is why it sits in the top three of our web hosting ranking.
NerdBible did not host a site on IONOS for this review. It is an editorial assessment based on IONOS's own product, pricing and company pages and on the published findings of independent review outlets, which we credit and link below.
What is IONOS and who is it for?
According to the IONOS About page, the company has been in the hosting business for more than 30 years, is headquartered in Germany, is part of the United Internet group and is listed on the German stock exchange. It says it manages over 6.2 million customer contracts and 22 million domains, runs more than 100,000 servers and operates ISO 27001 certified data centres in the US and Europe, which it describes as geo-redundant. It also calls itself the largest hosting company in Europe.
The product range is huge, from domains and email to website builders, WordPress hosting, VPS, dedicated servers and a full cloud platform. This review focuses on shared web hosting, the plans most small sites start on, and touches on the builder and store options that sit alongside them.
IONOS suits these buyers especially well:
- Small businesses that want a human to call. Phone support and a personal consultant are part of the package.
- Buyers who prefer European or US data residency. IONOS runs its own regional data centres and is subject to EU data protection rules at group level.
- Sites expected to grow into more. The same account can later add VPS, cloud or dedicated servers without changing provider.
It is a weaker fit for speed-obsessed site owners, for people who rely on cPanel-based tools, and for anyone moving an existing site who expects a free migration service.
Key features
Uptime and infrastructure
The IONOS web hosting page promises over 99.99% uptime, backed by what it describes as high-performance, geo-redundant infrastructure and redundant network connectivity. That is a stricter promise than the industry-standard 99.9%, and CNET's week-long monitoring was consistent with it.
Security included as standard
IONOS lists unlimited SSL certificates, a malware scanner on every shared plan, automatic malware removal on the top plan, DDoS protection, anti-phishing and anti-spam filtering, and automatic updates. Daily backups are listed as part of the plans. CNET notes that those backups are kept for 14 days, which is shorter than some rivals that keep a month of restore points.
Domain, email and apps
Every plan includes a free domain for the first year from a list of common extensions, a wildcard SSL certificate and professional email. Mailbox allowances differ by plan, so check the comparison table if you need several addresses; TechRadar found some shared plans include only one. IONOS says more than 70 applications, including WordPress, Joomla and Drupal, can be installed in a few clicks, and developers get SSH, SFTP, WP-CLI, Git version control, a cron manager and a choice of PHP versions.
Performance options
Higher plans add more server resources and a content delivery network to serve pages from locations closer to visitors. IONOS also says you can scale performance levels in real time without changing plan. The entry tier does not include the CDN.
Website builder and online store
If you would rather not run WordPress, the IONOS website builder page describes an AI-assisted builder that drafts text and images, templates organised by industry, and tiers that add online bookings and an SEO tool. IONOS also sells a separate online store builder and a newer chat-based AI app and site builder. TechRadar notes the builder supports translation into more than 60 languages and adds automatic cookie notices for GDPR compliance.
How much does IONOS cost?
Our page above shows current prices from our data; here is how the plans are structured. Shared web hosting comes in four tiers, named Essential, Starter, Plus and Ultimate on the IONOS page. Each step up adds server resources, storage and features: the CDN appears from the second tier, and the top tier adds the Pro malware scanner with automatic repair. The higher tiers allow unlimited websites.
Points worth knowing before you buy:
- Monthly or annual billing. The pricing table offers both, and IONOS says hosting is available without a minimum term on the relevant packages, with a one-month cancellation period.
- Introductory and renewal rates differ. The plan cards show a lower first-term rate and the higher rate that follows, so read both lines.
- Refund window. The About page and plan cards state a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Extras cost extra. HostingAdvice reports that on VPS plans, backups were a paid add-on, and TechRadar notes there is no free migration service on shared plans.
The free domain is for the first year only; it renews at the registrar's normal rate after that.
Is IONOS safe and private?
On the technical side, IONOS covers the essentials most small sites need: SSL, malware scanning, DDoS protection, spam filtering and daily backups. Its data centres are ISO 27001 certified according to the company, and TechRadar highlights geo-redundancy as one of the few places where IONOS stands out from other budget hosts even on basic plans.
On privacy, the US IONOS privacy policy sets out what IONOS Inc. collects from customers, such as contact and payment details and records of support contacts. If you run a site that collects visitor data, you remain responsible for your own privacy notice and consent banner, whatever host you choose.
Support
This is IONOS's strongest card. The company says every customer gets a dedicated personal consultant at no extra cost, and that local teams answer by phone, email and chat around the clock. CNET found that both chat and phone now open with an AI assistant and that it sometimes had to ask more than once for a human, but once connected the agents were quick and helpful. TechRadar's website builder review notes that 24/7 phone support is rare in this price bracket and especially useful for beginners.
What could be better
- Speed. Independent tests rate IONOS shared hosting below the fastest budget hosts, and basic plans lack built-in caching and CDN combinations that some rivals bundle.
- Thin entry plan. The cheapest tier supports one site, has fewer resources and skips the CDN.
- No free migration. TechRadar notes you must move an existing site yourself or pay for help.
- Proprietary control panel. CNET found it tidy, but warns that some migration tools only work with cPanel, which can make leaving harder.
- AI-first support routing. Getting past the bot to a person can take persistence.
- Short backup retention. Fourteen days of backups is enough for most mistakes but not for problems noticed late.
Who should choose something else?
If page speed is your top priority, for example a content site living on search traffic, a host with built-in caching and CDN on every plan will save you tuning work. If you are moving an established site and want the host to do it for free, look at providers that include migration. If you run many sites and live in cPanel, a cPanel-based host will feel more familiar. And if you only need a simple personal page, a website builder with a free tier may be enough before you pay for hosting at all.
What other reviewers found
- TechRadar concluded that IONOS shared hosting trails the best rivals, but praised the breadth of its product range, low starting costs, daily backups and geo-redundant data centres; it criticised the single mailbox on some shared plans and the lack of free migration.
- CNET recorded uptime in line with the 99.99% guarantee but found site speeds among the slowest it measured, and rated the support as effective once you reach a human.
- TechRadar's website builder review liked the ease of use, round-the-clock phone support and multilingual tools, but found customisation limited and noted the absence of a free trial.
- HostingAdvice highlighted daily backups and unlimited traffic on entry plans as unusual at this price and found renewal rates lower than several competitors, while noting that VPS backups cost extra.
- CNET summed up the speed issue bluntly, calling the overall average load time "atrocious".
Where they agree: every outlet sees IONOS as strong value with a broad range, solid security basics and better-than-usual support for a budget host. Where they disagree: HostingAdvice came away impressed with performance for the money, while CNET and TechRadar found shared hosting slower than the leaders. Test conditions differ, so the honest reading is that IONOS is reliable but not the fastest. For a buyer, that means it is a good fit for brochure sites, local businesses and small stores, while a speed-sensitive site should budget for a caching or CDN setup, or look elsewhere.
Is IONOS worth it?
For a small business that wants dependable uptime, the security basics included, a host based in Europe or the US with its own data centres, and a person to phone when something breaks, IONOS offers a lot. Go in knowing the shared plans are not the fastest, check the renewal line on the plan card, and pick a tier with the CDN if speed matters to your visitors. The 30-day money-back guarantee and month-to-month option make it low risk to try.
Bottom line
IONOS earns its place near the top of our web hosting ranking on reliability, support and value, backed by a long track record and its own geo-redundant infrastructure. It is not the speed champion and its cheapest plan is basic, but for most small sites that need a steady, well-supported home at a modest cost, it is a sensible choice.
Frequently asked questions
Is IONOS a reliable web host?
IONOS promises over 99.99% uptime on its web hosting plans, backed by geo-redundant data centres that it says are ISO 27001 certified. CNET monitored a test site for a week and recorded downtime consistent with that guarantee. Reliability is a strength; raw page speed on shared plans is the area where independent testers found it lagging the leaders.
Does IONOS offer phone support?
Yes. IONOS says support is available 24/7 by phone, email and chat, and that each customer gets a dedicated personal consultant at no extra cost. CNET found that chat and phone now start with an AI assistant, so you may need to ask for a human, but the agents it reached were quick and helpful.
Where are IONOS data centres?
IONOS says it operates its own regional data centres in the US and Europe, with headquarters in Germany. TechRadar reports that VPS customers can choose locations including the USA, UK, Germany and Spain. If data residency matters for your business, check the location offered for your specific plan at checkout, and speak to a qualified adviser about any compliance obligations.
Can I cancel IONOS and get a refund?
IONOS states a 30-day money-back guarantee on its hosting plans and says you can cancel online or by phone. It also offers hosting without a minimum term on the relevant packages, with monthly billing and a one-month cancellation period. Domain registrations and add-ons can carry their own terms, so check the order summary before you pay.
Does IONOS include a website builder?
IONOS sells a separate AI-assisted website builder with templates organised by industry, plus an online store builder and a chat-based AI app and site builder. Web hosting plans are aimed at people running WordPress, Joomla, Drupal or their own code, with more than 70 apps available to install in a few clicks.
