Babbel teaches 13 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese, through courses created by more than 200 language experts. Lessons are built around real-life conversations, with speech recognition for pronunciation, real-time feedback and progress tracking.

Pimsleur teaches 50+ languages through 30-minute audio lessons that use spaced repetition and ask you to speak out loud, with no written material required. Its app adds a hands-free driving mode with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus reading lessons, flash cards and a Voice Coach for pronunciation.

The real difference is how you learn. Babbel is screen-based and structured, mixing reading, writing, listening and speaking. Pimsleur is ear-based, built so you can learn while driving, walking or doing chores.

Our verdict

Babbel is our first pick for most learners because it covers more of what a beginner needs: you see how words are spelled, learn grammar in context, and practise the phrases you will actually use when travelling, working or talking with family. The expert-built courses and progress tracking make steady progress easy to keep up.

Choose Pimsleur if your goal is to speak and understand, you have time in the car or on foot rather than at a screen, or the language you want is not one of Babbel's 13. With courses in 50+ languages it is often the only polished option for less widely taught languages, and the audio-first method trains your ear and your mouth from the first lesson.

Many learners combine the two: Pimsleur on the commute, Babbel at home for reading and grammar.
