Our verdict

This LegalZoom review looks at the best-known name in online business formation. LegalZoom will prepare and file your limited liability company (LLC) paperwork with the state, and it surrounds that filing with a wider set of services than most rivals: operating agreements, EIN applications, a library of legal forms, bookkeeping tools, registered agent service, compliance reminders and, most distinctively, subscription access to independent attorneys for short consultations.

That ecosystem is why LegalZoom earns its place on our LLC registration ranking. If you expect to need legal documents and the odd question answered by a lawyer as your business grows, having all of it in one account is genuinely convenient. The trade-offs are well documented by other reviewers: registered agent service is not included in any formation package, the checkout is full of optional extras, and once your paperwork reaches the state, the refund window has effectively closed. Budget-focused founders who just want the filing done can pay less elsewhere.

NerdBible did not form a company through LegalZoom for this review. It is an editorial assessment built from LegalZoom's own package, registered agent, guarantee and terms pages, guidance from the US Small Business Administration (SBA) and the IRS, and published reviews from NerdWallet, LLC University, TopConsumerReviews and Trustpilot users. Nothing here is legal or tax advice.

What is LegalZoom and who is it for?

LegalZoom is an online legal services company. It is careful to say what it is not: its terms of use state that LegalZoom is not a law firm and does not give legal advice, except where authorised through its own subsidiary law firm, and that it provides self-help services and access to independent attorneys. Communications with LegalZoom itself are not covered by attorney-client privilege. That distinction matters when you decide how much to rely on the forms and guidance.

For LLC formation, the LegalZoom LLC page walks you through a questionnaire, checks your business name, prepares your articles of organization and files them with the state. The service is aimed at:

  • First-time founders who want a guided process and a recognisable brand handling the paperwork.
  • Small businesses that expect ongoing legal needs, such as contracts, trademarks or employment documents, and like the idea of one provider for all of it.
  • Owners who want a lawyer within reach without retaining a law firm, through LegalZoom's attorney subscription.

It is less suited to experienced founders who know exactly which forms they need, or to anyone forming several entities on a tight budget, because the per-service add-ons accumulate.

Key features

Three formation packages

LegalZoom sells three LLC packages. The Basic package covers the essentials: a business name check, preparation and filing of the articles of organization, a digital welcome packet and a tax consultation through a partner accounting firm. Pro adds an operating agreement, an EIN application, a 30-day trial of the Business Attorney Plan with unlimited 30-minute consultations, a year of access to more than 150 customisable legal documents and eSignature, and a website builder through a partner. Premium adds six months of bookkeeping tools, invoicing and expense tracking. All three also include an introduction to a small business specialist and insurance quotes from a partner.

Registered agent and compliance calendar

Every state requires an LLC to name a registered agent to receive legal papers. The SBA's registration guide says you need one in place before you file, and that many owners prefer to use a service rather than do it themselves. LegalZoom's registered agent service is a separate annual subscription. It includes alerts when official mail arrives, scanning and online access to documents, unlimited cloud storage, and email reminders about annual report deadlines through its Compliance Calendar. The page says the subscription renews automatically each year at the then-current rate, and that cancelling may require proof that you have appointed a new agent with the state.

Attorney access

The Business Attorney Plan is LegalZoom's clearest point of difference. Subscribers can book unlimited 30-minute calls with independent attorneys on topics such as company setup, contracts, hiring and compliance. The Pro and Premium formation packages include a 30-day trial, after which it becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel. Remember that these attorneys are independent of LegalZoom, and the company's satisfaction guarantee does not cover their services.

Filing accuracy guarantee

LegalZoom offers a "100% Accurate Filing Guarantee": if the state rejects your filing because of a LegalZoom error, it corrects and refiles at no extra charge.

How much does LegalZoom cost?

Our product card shows current prices from our own data, so this section covers structure. Formation itself starts with a free Basic package, plus the state filing fee that every formation service passes through. Pro and Premium are one-off package fees on top of the state fee. Several of the most useful items are recurring subscriptions: registered agent service is billed annually, and the attorney plan, legal forms library, eSignature and bookkeeping tools continue as paid subscriptions after any included trial period. Expedited processing and individual documents are sold separately.

Two points help keep costs in check. First, the IRS says an EIN is free when you apply directly, and warns against websites that charge for one; paying a service to file it is a convenience, not a requirement. Second, read every pre-ticked box and trial at checkout, and note each renewal date. Whether an LLC is the right structure for you, and what it means for your taxes, are questions for an attorney or accountant, not a formation service.

Is LegalZoom legit? Guarantees, refunds and trust

LegalZoom is a long-established, widely used company, and the main question for buyers is not legitimacy but terms. Its satisfaction guarantee works differently by product type:

  • Filed products, such as LLC formation: you can request a refund within 60 days of purchase only while the order has not yet been submitted to the government agency. Once filed, no refund applies.
  • Documents that are not filed, such as an operating agreement: refunds within 60 days if incomplete, or within 7 days of completion.
  • Subscriptions: a 30-day refund window, limited once you have used the service, for example after a consultation or a document download.
  • Exclusions: government fees once submitted, third-party processing fees and services from independent attorneys.

That is a fair, clearly written policy, but it is not the broad money-back promise some marketing implies. The practical lesson is to decide on add-ons before your filing is submitted, and to cancel any trial subscriptions you will not use within their windows.

On privacy, LegalZoom's terms note that your communications with the company are protected by its privacy policy rather than by legal privilege. If something sensitive is at stake, speak to a lawyer directly.

What could be better

  • No registered agent in any package. Several competitors bundle a free first year; LegalZoom charges for it separately and auto-renews it.
  • Upselling. Nearly every independent reviewer, and many customers, mention the number of add-ons and follow-up sales contacts.
  • Refunds stop once filed. The guarantee is clear, but it gives little protection after the state has your paperwork.
  • Standard processing is not the fastest. LLC University noted that filing yourself can be quicker in many states than standard service.
  • Operating agreements come as finished documents, and LLC University criticised them as hard to edit later.

Who should choose something else

If you only want the state filing and a registered agent at the lowest total cost, a provider that bundles a year of registered agent service will usually cost less over the first year. If you are comfortable reading your state's instructions, the SBA points out that you can register directly with the state yourself and apply for an EIN with the IRS for free. And if your situation is genuinely complex, such as multiple owners with unequal stakes, investors, or regulated activities, hiring a business attorney directly may serve you better than a self-help platform.

What other reviewers found

  • NerdWallet called LegalZoom a solid pick for owners who want legal help without hiring a law firm, praising seven-day support and its document tools, but flagged aggressive upselling at signup and mixed customer reports about billing.
  • LLC University was the toughest critic, rating it 3.7 out of 5. It found the interface easy, but said the costs climb quickly with add-ons, the registered agent fee is high, and phone staff leaned towards selling.
  • TopConsumerReviews scored it 4.4 out of 5 and ranked it third, crediting attorney access and the breadth of services while noting higher mid-tier costs and bundles that make picking single items harder.
  • On Trustpilot, tens of thousands of customers give a strong average, frequently praising patient, helpful staff, while a minority complain of persistent sales calls and unexpected costs.

Where they agree and disagree. The outlets agree on the shape of LegalZoom: an easy, guided process, the broadest set of related legal services, and a checkout full of extras. They disagree on value. Reviewers who weigh attorney access and document tools heavily rank it near the top; reviewers who judge formation services on total cost for the filing and registered agent alone push it down. For a buyer, the deciding question is whether you will actually use the legal tools after formation. If yes, LegalZoom's ecosystem is worth paying for. If no, it is an expensive way to file a form.

Bottom line: is LegalZoom worth it?

LegalZoom is worth it for founders who want one trusted provider for formation and the legal paperwork that follows, and who value being able to put a question to an attorney without retaining a firm. It is not the cheapest way to form an LLC, its registered agent is an extra annual cost, and its refund guarantee offers little once your filing is with the state. Choose the package you need before checkout, decline the extras you will not use, and diary every renewal date.

Frequently asked questions

Is LegalZoom a law firm?

No. LegalZoom's terms state that it is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice, except where authorised through its own subsidiary law firm. It offers self-help document services and access to independent attorneys through subscription plans. Communications with LegalZoom itself are not protected by attorney-client privilege, which is worth remembering for sensitive matters.

Does LegalZoom include a registered agent?

No formation package includes one. LegalZoom sells registered agent service as a separate annual subscription that renews automatically. It includes mail alerts, document scanning, cloud storage and annual report reminders. Every LLC needs a registered agent, so compare the total first-year cost of filing plus agent service when choosing a provider.

Can I get a refund from LegalZoom?

For LLC formation, LegalZoom's guarantee allows a refund request within 60 days of purchase only while your order has not been submitted to the state. Once filed, no refund applies. Subscriptions have a 30-day window with limits once used, and government fees and independent attorney services are excluded from the guarantee.

Do I need LegalZoom to get an EIN?

No. The IRS issues EINs free of charge through its own online application and warns against websites that charge for one. LegalZoom's Pro and Premium packages include an EIN application as a convenience, which saves you a step but is not required. You can apply directly with the IRS once your LLC exists.

How long does LegalZoom take to form an LLC?

Timing depends on LegalZoom's processing speed and on your state's own turnaround. LLC University reported standard processing of roughly one to two weeks, with expedited service available for an extra fee. Some states approve online filings very quickly, so filing directly can sometimes be faster than a standard service order.
