Our verdict
This Puffy review covers one of the best-known bed-in-a-box brands in the US, famous for a soft, cloud-like memory foam feel. Puffy now sells a range rather than a single mattress: the all-foam Puffy Cloud, and the Lux, Royal, Monarch and Legacy hybrids, which combine foam with coils. Each comes with a long home trial, free shipping and returns, and a limited lifetime warranty, and Puffy says its mattresses are assembled in the USA.
We rank Puffy highly for side sleepers because the softer models in the range are built to cushion shoulders and hips, and because its trial and warranty terms remove much of the risk of buying a mattress online. The important caveat is that the range is not uniform. Independent testers found the Royal plush and well suited to side and back sleepers, but described the redesigned Lux Hybrid as noticeably firmer and better for back and stomach sleepers. Heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers should read the model details carefully, and the trial has conditions worth understanding before you order.
NerdBible did not sleep on Puffy mattresses for this review. It is an editorial assessment based on Puffy's product, warranty and return policy pages, the CPSC recall database, and independent reviews from Tom's Guide, CNET and Mattress Clarity.
What is Puffy and who is it for?
The Puffy homepage presents the brand as a luxury mattress maker with a 365-night sleep trial, free shipping and returns, a lifetime warranty and mattresses assembled in the USA. It also sells smart beds with adjustable bases, bed frames, pillows, toppers and bedding. A quiz on the site steers shoppers between models based on sleep position and preference.
Puffy suits:
- Side sleepers who like a soft, sink-in surface, particularly on the Royal and the all-foam Cloud.
- Couples who want good motion isolation so one partner's movement does not wake the other.
- Cautious online buyers who want a long trial and a warranty that runs for as long as they own the bed.
- Hot sleepers who want gel-infused foams and breathable covers, which testers found regulated temperature well.
It is a weaker match for heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers on the softer models, people who want to choose their own firmness level within a model, and anyone who prefers a bouncy, traditional innerspring feel.
The Puffy mattress range
Puffy Cloud
The Puffy Cloud page describes a 10-inch, six-layer all-foam mattress with a medium-firm feel, heat-dispersing gel foam, cooling yarns in the cover and low motion transfer. It is the brand's entry model. Tom's Guide's overview of the original Puffy mattress described a softer surface that suits side sleepers and some back sleepers, and warned that heavier and stomach sleepers may sink too far, with weaker edge support.
Puffy Lux Hybrid
The Puffy Lux page describes a 12-inch, eight-layer hybrid with a medium-plush feel, a cooling foam layer, wrapped coils and a cover with TENCEL fibres. Puffy pitches it as plush on top and firm below. This is the model independent testers disagree about most, because it has been redesigned: Tom's Guide's earlier test found an older version very soft, while CNET found the redesigned model much firmer.
Puffy Royal Hybrid and above
The Royal is a 10-layer hybrid with five-zone support foam and coils, described as ultra-plush. Tom's Guide tested it for more than three weeks and recommended it for side and back sleepers who share a bed with a restless partner. Above it sit the Monarch and Legacy hybrids, which we did not find independent reviews of.
How much does a Puffy mattress cost?
Our product card shows current prices. Structurally, each model is sold in sizes from Twin to California King and split configurations, with the hybrids priced above the all-foam Cloud. Puffy runs near-constant promotions, often including free pillows and accessories or free upgrades, so the list price and the price you pay rarely match. Tom's Guide described the Lux as slightly overpriced against competitors at its regular price, which is worth keeping in mind when a promotion ends.
Sleep trial, returns and warranty
The 365-night trial
Puffy's return policy offers a 365-night sleep trial with a full refund on mattresses bought directly from puffy.com. The conditions matter. You must sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before a refund can be processed. Returns are limited to two per household for life, and must be requested within 365 days of delivery. The policy notes that the longer trial applies to purchases after a recent policy change, while earlier buyers keep their original, shorter trial terms.
How a return works also matters. For opened mattresses, Puffy arranges a free pickup for charity donation or lets you arrange the donation yourself, and a donation receipt is required to receive your full refund. Only unopened items go back to Puffy's facility. Some accessories, such as the swivel chair, carry a restocking fee.
Lifetime warranty
Puffy's warranty page describes a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship, with repair or replacement with a comparable model. Exclusions include normal wear and tear, body impressions shallower than one and a half inches, comfort preferences, damage from improper use or an unsuitable frame, and any mattress bought used or from an unauthorised seller. It does not transfer to a new owner. Puffy advertises it as a lifetime warranty, which is fair, but it is a limited warranty with conditions rather than unconditional cover.
Is Puffy safe?
We found no Puffy mattress in the Consumer Product Safety Commission's mattress recall listings, which include several budget brands sold online. Tom's Guide noted that the Lux's off-gassing smell lingered in its test, which is common with new foam mattresses; airing the room for a few days usually helps. Puffy's warranty excludes naturally occurring foam aromas and allergies to materials, so if you are sensitive, ask about materials before buying. If you have back pain or a health condition that affects sleep, a doctor or physical therapist is a better guide to firmness than any mattress marketing, including claims about chiropractic endorsement.
What could be better
- Inconsistent firmness across reviews. The redesigned Lux is firmer than its reputation, so the right model matters.
- Not ideal for heavier or stomach sleepers on the softer models.
- Trial conditions. Thirty-night minimum, two returns per household, and donation receipts for opened mattresses.
- Edge support varies. Tom's Guide rated it average on the Royal and weaker on the original all-foam bed.
- Off-gassing. A new-foam smell can linger.
- Constant promotions. Regular pricing is hard to judge.
Who should choose something else?
If you sleep on your stomach or weigh more and want strong support, look at a firmer hybrid or an innerspring with zoned coils. If you want to pick an exact firmness level, choose a brand that offers several firmness options for the same model. If you prefer natural materials such as latex or organic cotton, a specialist brand will suit you better. And if you want to try a mattress in person first, a store that lets you lie on it may beat any online trial.
What other reviewers found
- Tom's Guide found its tested Lux Hybrid very soft, suiting lightweight side sleepers, with good temperature regulation, motion isolation and edge support, but too little support for most other sleepers, a lingering smell, and a slightly high price. It notes Puffy has since redesigned the bed.
- CNET tested the redesigned Lux Hybrid and found it much firmer than the previous model, rating it medium and better suited to back and stomach sleepers than side sleepers, with solid temperature regulation.
- Tom's Guide recommended the Royal Hybrid for side and back sleepers who share a bed, praising its motion isolation and plush feel, and listing average edge support and no customisation as cons.
- Mattress Clarity rated the Lux highly for cooling, motion isolation, trial and warranty, but gave lower marks for support and durability, suggesting most stomach sleepers need something firmer.
- Tom's Guide's broader look at the original Puffy mattress found it a good fit for side sleepers but not for heavier or stomach sleepers, and noted weaker edge support.
Where reviewers agree and disagree
Reviewers agree that Puffy's mattresses sleep cool, isolate motion well and come with generous trial and warranty terms. They also agree that the softer models are not built for heavier or stomach sleepers. The disagreement is about the Lux Hybrid, and it is explained by the redesign: older tests describe a plush, side-sleeper bed, while CNET's test of the new version describes a firmer one. For a buyer, that means the Puffy name alone does not tell you the feel. Side sleepers who want plushness should look first at the Royal or the Cloud, read the current product page, and use the trial.
Is Puffy worth it?
For side sleepers and couples who want a soft, cool, quiet bed with low purchase risk, yes. Choose the model carefully, since the range now spans plush to medium, and understand the trial rules before you buy. Buy during a promotion, keep your order details, and give the mattress the full 30 nights before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Is Puffy good for side sleepers?
Generally yes, depending on the model. Tom's Guide recommended the plush Royal Hybrid for side and back sleepers and found the original all-foam Puffy suited side sleepers. However, CNET found the redesigned Lux Hybrid much firmer and better for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers who want a soft feel should look first at the Royal or Cloud.
How does Puffy's 365-night trial work?
Puffy's return policy offers a refund within 365 nights on mattresses bought from puffy.com, after a minimum of 30 nights. Each household is limited to two returns for life. Opened mattresses are donated to charity through a free pickup or your own arrangement, and a donation receipt is needed for the full refund. Earlier purchases keep their original trial terms.
What does Puffy's lifetime warranty cover?
Puffy's limited lifetime warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, with repair or replacement. It excludes normal wear and tear, body impressions under one and a half inches, comfort preferences, damage from misuse or an unsuitable frame, and mattresses bought used or from unauthorised sellers. It does not transfer if you sell the mattress.
Is Puffy made in the USA?
Puffy's homepage and product pages say its mattresses are assembled in the USA. Assembled is not the same as every component being made domestically, and Puffy's pages do not list where each material comes from. If origin of materials matters to you, contact Puffy support before buying and ask about the specific model.
Does a Puffy mattress smell when new?
It can. Tom's Guide noted a lingering off-gassing smell when testing the Lux Hybrid, which is common with new foam mattresses. Unboxing in a well-ventilated room and leaving it to air for a few days usually helps. Puffy's warranty excludes naturally occurring foam aromas, so the smell itself is not grounds for a warranty claim.
