Upwork review: our verdict

This Upwork review looks at the world's best-known freelance marketplace from the point of view of a business that wants virtual help, whether that is an admin assistant for a few hours a week, a bookkeeper for month-end or a specialist for a one-off project. For many small businesses Upwork is the most flexible way to do that. It is free to join and post a job, it covers almost every kind of remote work, and it handles contracts, time tracking, payment protection and dispute assistance in one place, so you only pay for work you have hired and approved.

The catch is that Upwork is a marketplace, not a managed service. You write the brief, sort through proposals, interview, choose and manage the person yourself, and the quality of freelancers varies widely. If you want someone else to find, vet and supervise an assistant for you, a managed virtual assistant service will be less work. If you are comfortable hiring, Upwork offers more choice than anything else in the category, which is why it sits in the top three of our virtual assistant ranking.

NerdBible did not hire through Upwork for this review. It is an editorial assessment based on Upwork's own help, product and investor documents and on the published findings of independent reviewers, which we credit and link below.

What is Upwork and who is it for?

Upwork is a publicly listed US company. Its latest annual report to the SEC describes the Upwork Marketplace as a work marketplace connecting businesses with independent professionals and agencies, with customers in more than 180 countries, and a separate enterprise business called Lifted for large organisations managing contingent workforces. Clients range from solo founders to very large companies.

For virtual assistance, Upwork suits:

  • Owners who know what they need. If you can describe the tasks, hours and tools, you will get relevant proposals quickly.
  • Businesses wanting flexibility. You can hire by the hour for ongoing support or at a fixed price for defined tasks, and scale up or stop when you like.
  • People who need specialist skills. Beyond general admin, the same marketplace covers bookkeeping, customer support, design, development and marketing.

It is a weaker fit if you have no time to screen candidates, want a guaranteed replacement if someone leaves, or need a full-time employee rather than a contractor.

How Upwork works for clients

Posting a job and finding people

According to Upwork's How it works for clients page, creating an account and posting a job is free. Guided prompts help you write the post, freelancers then send proposals, and you can also search profiles and invite people to apply. Upwork says most clients hire within three days of posting. Its AI assistant, Uma, can highlight key points in profiles and, optionally, run recorded video interview questions with transcripts and summaries.

Evaluating freelancers

Profiles show portfolios, work history and feedback from previous clients, along with skill certifications and identity verification badges. You can message, call or video chat before hiring. Fit Small Business notes that Upwork also gives freelancers a success score based on feedback, rehires and completed contracts, but that vetting at sign-up is limited, so the screening is largely yours to do.

Project Catalog

Instead of posting a job, you can buy a predefined service with a set scope, timeline and price from the Project Catalog. Fit Small Business describes this as similar to rival gig marketplaces and useful when you want a specific deliverable without screening applicants.

Hourly or fixed-price contracts

For ongoing work, Upwork recommends hourly contracts: the freelancer logs time each week and you are billed automatically for approved hours, with the chance to review time before billing is finalised. For defined tasks, fixed-price contracts use milestones that you fund up front into escrow and release only when you approve the work. You can pause, update or end a contract from your dashboard.

Payment protection and disputes

Upwork's annual report describes escrow services, approval workflows and dispute resolution processes designed so clients pay only for completed work and talent are paid in full and on time. The how-it-works page says that if you are unhappy, you should first discuss revisions with the freelancer, and that Upwork offers dispute assistance if needed.

Mobile app

The Upwork app combines hiring and freelancing in one place, letting clients post jobs, message, track projects and manage contracts on the go.

How much does Upwork cost?

We do not quote Upwork's fees here, because they change and depend on your plan and payment method, but the structure is worth understanding. There is no subscription or cost to join. Instead:

  • Clients pay a service fee on each payment to a freelancer, set by membership plan. The Basic plan carries a marketplace fee; the Business Plus plan, which is free to join and runs on a monthly cycle, carries a higher fee in exchange for extra features. Upwork says eligible US clients paying from a checking account get a lower rate.
  • Freelancers pay their own service fee on earnings. Upwork's freelancer fee help article says this varies per contract within a set range, is shown before the contract starts and then stays fixed. Freelancers may build it into their rates.
  • Freelancers set their own rates, so the main cost of a virtual assistant is the hourly or fixed price you agree.
  • Enterprise clients are served through Lifted on custom terms.

Business Plus, according to Upwork, adds access to a top tier of Expert-Vetted talent, faster AI shortlists, priority 24/7 support, advanced reporting and, for eligible US companies, monthly invoicing on Net 30 terms.

Is Upwork safe?

Upwork's annual report says it uses machine learning, identity verification and third-party fraud detection to spot suspicious activity, and it acknowledges that these controls require continuous improvement and may not catch all misconduct. In practice, the safeguards that matter most for a client are escrow on fixed-price work, reviewing logged hours before you are billed, and keeping communication and payment on the platform so there is a record if something goes wrong. Several independent reviewers report encountering scams or low-quality applicants, so verify identity, check work history and start with a small paid task. Upwork freelancers are generally independent contractors; for questions about worker classification or contracts in your country, speak to an accountant or employment lawyer.

What could be better

  • Screening is your job. Basic sign-up vetting is limited, and reviewers stress that you must assess candidates yourself.
  • Fees add up. Both sides pay a service fee, which reviewers consistently flag as a drawback.
  • Variable quality. The marketplace ranges from excellent specialists to inexperienced or unreliable applicants.
  • Support frustrations. DDIY reports that support can be slow to resolve disputes with freelancers, and some users turn to social media for help.
  • Feedback scores are imperfect. DDIY notes that contracts closed without feedback can affect success scores, so read the full history.

Who should choose something else?

If you want an assistant who is already vetted, trained and managed, with someone else handling replacement and quality, a managed virtual assistant company is the better fit, even if it costs more per hour. If you only need small, cheap one-off tasks, a fixed-price gig marketplace may be quicker. And if you are hiring a permanent employee, Fit Small Business suggests that a traditional job board is likely to reach more candidates looking for full-time roles.

What other reviewers found

  • Fit Small Business ranked Upwork first among freelance hiring sites, praising its job posting tools, breadth of talent and ease of use, while noting limited vetting and higher costs than cheaper gig sites for small jobs.
  • DDIY still recommends Upwork for hiring despite having encountered scams on it, and advises clients to "hire slow and fire fast"; it criticised slow support and imperfect success scores.
  • HireInSouth, a recruitment firm that competes with Upwork, describes it as largely self-service and best for businesses with clear project requirements and time to manage hiring themselves.
  • Morgan Overholt, writing as a long-time freelancer on the platform, values Upwork for supplying ready-to-hire clients and for handling contracts, billing and mediation, which helps explain why skilled freelancers stay on it.

Where they agree: every reviewer sees Upwork as the broadest and most convenient marketplace, with useful payment protection and contract tools. Where they disagree: how much the platform's safeguards reduce the work of hiring. Fit Small Business emphasises the tools and scoring that help you filter, while DDIY and HireInSouth stress that vetting, interviewing and managing remain the client's job and that weak or dishonest applicants do appear. For a buyer, that means Upwork works best when you set aside time to screen properly and start with a short paid trial task before committing to ongoing hours.

Is Upwork worth it?

For a business that wants flexible virtual help and is willing to do its own hiring, Upwork is worth it: you get unmatched choice, hourly or fixed-price options, and escrow and time-tracking protection, with no cost until you hire. If you would rather pay more to have someone else find and manage your assistant, a managed service will suit you better.

Bottom line

Upwork earns its place near the top of our virtual assistant ranking as the best freelance marketplace for businesses that want control and choice. Its fees and variable quality are real drawbacks, but with a clear brief, careful screening and a short trial, it is one of the most flexible ways to get remote help.

Frequently asked questions

Is Upwork free for businesses?

Creating an account and posting a job on Upwork is free, and there is no subscription for the Basic or Business Plus plans. You pay only once you start a contract: the freelancer's agreed rate plus a client service fee on each payment, which depends on your plan and payment method. Enterprise clients are served through Lifted on custom terms.

How do I hire a virtual assistant on Upwork?

Post a job describing the tasks, hours, tools and time zone you need, or search profiles and invite people to apply. Review portfolios, work history and client feedback, then interview by message or video. Upwork says most clients hire within three days. Starting with a small paid task is a sensible way to test fit.

How does Upwork protect clients?

For fixed-price work, you fund milestones into escrow and release payment only after approving the work. For hourly contracts, you can review logged hours before billing is finalised. Upwork also offers dispute assistance and uses identity verification and fraud detection. Keeping communication and payment on the platform preserves a record if problems arise.

What is Upwork Business Plus?

Business Plus is a client membership that is free to join and runs on a monthly cycle, with a higher per-payment fee than the Basic plan. Upwork says it adds access to Expert-Vetted talent, faster AI-generated shortlists, priority 24/7 support, advanced reporting and, for eligible US companies, Net 30 monthly invoicing.

Are Upwork freelancers vetted?

Partly. Upwork offers identity verification badges, skill certifications and client feedback, and Business Plus gives access to a smaller pool of Expert-Vetted talent. However, independent reviewers note that general sign-up vetting is limited, so you should check work history, ask for samples and run a short paid test before relying on anyone.
