This Ultahost review looks at a younger hosting company that has grown quickly on the strength of low cost VPS plans, NVMe storage and a long list of data centre locations. Ultahost sells shared, WordPress, VPS, dedicated and even macOS and game servers. NerdBible has not run hands-on tests for this review. It is an editorial assessment built from Ultahost's own plan, data centre, about and refund pages, and from the published findings of PCMag, Website Planet and HostScore, each linked below.
Ultahost review: our verdict
Ultahost is our pick for VPS value. Its managed VPS plans pair NVMe storage and DDR5 memory with unlimited bandwidth, DDoS protection, free backups and a choice of more than two dozen locations, at an entry point well below many established brands. It also covers unusual needs that bigger hosts ignore, such as Windows servers, macOS servers and game servers.
The caution is consistency. Independent reviewers have reported very different experiences, from excellent uptime to a month long outage that support could not fix quickly. Ultahost is a good fit for a developer or small business that keeps its own backups and monitoring and wants a cheap, capable VPS. It is a riskier fit for a non technical owner who will rely entirely on the host when something breaks.
What Ultahost is and who it is for
According to its about page, Ultahost was founded by Scriptsun Ltd and has since become an independent brand. The data centre page lists more than 27 locations across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia, including several US cities, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Madrid, in Tier 3 and Tier 4 facilities.
Ultahost suits:
- Developers and small teams who want a low cost VPS with root access and NVMe storage.
- Businesses that need a server near a specific audience, thanks to the long location list.
- Projects with unusual requirements, such as Windows hosting, macOS servers or game servers.
- Budget shared hosting buyers who want daily backups included on every tier.
Key features
NVMe VPS with modern hardware
The VPS page describes plans that scale from one CPU core and 1GB of DDR5 RAM upward, all on NVMe SSD storage with unlimited bandwidth and a dedicated IPv4 address. Ultahost says its VPS hardware uses AMD EPYC processors. Each plan includes a free weekly backup, plus the ability to take full backups and instant snapshots from the admin panel.
Managed or bring your own panel
Ultahost markets its VPS as managed, and says that adding a control panel gives you a fully hands off service. Free panels such as Hestia and CyberPanel are offered, as are paid panels including cPanel, Plesk and DirectAdmin. You can also choose a plain operating system image if you prefer to manage everything yourself.
Shared hosting with daily backups
The shared hosting page lists four tiers powered by cPanel, with NVMe storage, unlimited bandwidth, free SSL, malware protection, free website migration and free backups. Ultahost says shared account backups run daily with multiple recovery points. Website Planet singled out free daily backups on the cheapest plan as a genuine strength.
Uncommon server types
PCMag highlighted Ultahost's macOS and game server options as reasons it stands out, along with Windows servers that many shared hosts do not offer. If you need a Mac build machine in the cloud or a small game server, few mainstream hosts compete.
How much does Ultahost cost?
Our page shows prices from our own data, so this section covers structure only. Ultahost sells shared and VPS plans monthly or on longer terms, with lower effective rates for longer commitments, and HostScore noted that renewal prices are higher than the discounted sign up rates. PCMag reported that shared plans carry monthly visitor limits that rise by tier, and that VPS plans remove those caps. Control panel licences such as cPanel or Plesk are paid extras on VPS, and add-ons offered at checkout include security and backup services from third parties, so read the basket carefully.
Is Ultahost reliable?
Ultahost advertises a 99.99 percent uptime guarantee on its VPS page and on its shared hosting page. Independent results are the most divided of any host in this category. HostScore rated uptime and speed as outstanding. PCMag, which reviewed the full range, focused on plans and features rather than uptime and described the VPS packages as rock solid for the price. Website Planet, testing a shared plan, recorded uptime of 43.78 percent over a month, with its test site offline for 17 days while an escalated support ticket waited for resolution, and it cancelled.
A single bad test does not define a host, and Website Planet itself said its problems may have been isolated. But a failure of that length is a reason to protect yourself: run an external uptime monitor, keep off server backups, and test the support response during the refund window.
Is Ultahost safe for your data?
Ultahost includes free SSL and DDoS protection on every plan, and PCMag noted BitNinja security on higher tier servers. Backups are a relative strength: daily for shared accounts, weekly plus on demand snapshots for VPS. Our own listing describes Ultahost as offering daily backups; on the VPS page the included automatic backup is weekly, so if you need daily VPS backups, schedule snapshots yourself or add a backup service.
Ultahost's terms place responsibility for the lawfulness of hosted data on the customer, and the refund policy says Ultahost cannot be held responsible for data loss after cancellation. Download your data before you close an account.
Support
The VPS page lists 24/7 live chat, ticket support, a knowledge base and an AI assistant, and Ultahost says critical issues are answered in under 30 minutes. HostScore found support available around the clock and generally responsive, with documentation still catching up. PCMag needed an agent's help when its site builder's edit button did nothing. Website Planet found chat agents quick to respond but unable to resolve its outage without escalation, which then took weeks.
Refund policy
Ultahost's cancellation and refunds policy offers refunds within 30 days on shared, VPS, WordPress, Windows shared, reseller and game hosting. The exclusions matter. Dedicated servers, higher priced VDS servers, control panel licences, SSL certificates and domains are not refundable; the offer applies only to the first package on an account less than 30 days old; accounts with more than one hosting order are not eligible; and payments made in cryptocurrency are not refunded. Requests must be made through the client area before the account is closed.
How to get the most from Ultahost
Because independent results vary, a few habits make a large difference. First, pick the data centre closest to the majority of your visitors at sign up; with more than 27 locations, that choice alone can do more for speed than any caching plugin. Second, set up an external uptime monitor on day one so you, not your visitors, are the first to know about an outage, and so you have evidence if you need to escalate. Third, keep an off server backup on a schedule that suits your site: daily for a shop or busy blog, weekly for a brochure site. Fourth, if you are not comfortable at the command line, add a control panel to your VPS so routine tasks such as email, databases and SSL renewals can be handled through a browser. Finally, open a test support ticket during your first week to see how quickly a real person replies.
What could be better
- Independent reliability results range from excellent to a long outage.
- Escalated support issues can take a long time to resolve, according to Website Planet.
- VPS backups are weekly by default, not daily.
- The refund policy has more exclusions than most rivals.
- Shared plans carry visitor limits, and control panel licences cost extra on VPS.
Who should choose something else
If you are not comfortable managing backups and monitoring yourself, a more established managed host is the safer choice, even at a higher price. Businesses that need a contract backed service level with clear credits should compare the terms of larger providers. Online shops that cannot afford even a short outage should prioritise a host with a long, consistent record in independent tests. And if you need a simple blog, a mainstream shared host or a hosted platform will be easier.
Bottom line
Ultahost offers capable, modern VPS hardware, a long list of locations and genuinely unusual server types at a low entry point, with daily backups even on its cheapest shared plan. Its record in independent testing is uneven, so it rewards buyers who keep their own backups and monitoring. Used that way, it is one of the better value VPS options available.
What other reviewers found
- PCMag called Ultahost right priced, with macOS and game server support that set it apart, but said visitor and email limits keep it from the top tier.
- Website Planet praised free daily backups and fast page loads, but recorded a month in which its site was down for 17 days and support could not fix it quickly.
- HostScore rated uptime and speed as outstanding and recommended Ultahost for budget conscious developers, noting higher renewal prices and documentation gaps.
- Customer reviews on Trustpilot are polarised: many praise helpful staff and dependable hosting, while a sizeable minority report downtime, slow escalations and billing problems.
Where they agree: the hardware is modern, the feature list is generous for the price, and support is easy to reach. Where they disagree: reliability and the quality of support once a problem is escalated, with Website Planet's experience far worse than HostScore's or PCMag's. For a buyer, the disagreement says the platform can perform very well but that you should not depend on it alone. Use the 30 day window to check performance and support with your own site.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ultahost good for VPS hosting?
For value, yes. Ultahost's VPS plans use NVMe storage, DDR5 memory and AMD EPYC processors, include unlimited bandwidth, DDoS protection, a dedicated IPv4 address and a free weekly backup, and can be deployed in more than 27 locations. Independent reliability results are mixed, so keep your own backups and monitoring, and test support during the refund window.
Does Ultahost include backups?
Yes. Ultahost says shared hosting accounts are backed up daily with multiple recovery points. VPS plans include a free weekly backup and let you create full backups and instant snapshots whenever you like from the admin panel. Because no host's backup should be your only copy, keep an off server backup of anything you cannot afford to lose.
What is Ultahost's refund policy?
Ultahost offers refunds within 30 days on most hosting services, including shared, VPS, WordPress and game hosting. Dedicated servers, higher priced VDS plans, control panel licences, SSL certificates and domains are excluded, as are cryptocurrency payments and accounts with more than one hosting order. Request a refund through the client area before you close the account.
Where are Ultahost's data centres?
Ultahost lists more than 27 data centre locations across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia. Named locations include Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, New York, Seattle, Mexico City, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Madrid. Choosing a location close to most of your visitors usually gives the best page speed without needing a CDN.
Does Ultahost offer cPanel?
Yes. Shared hosting plans are powered by cPanel. On VPS plans you choose the panel: free options such as Hestia and CyberPanel, paid licences such as cPanel, Plesk or DirectAdmin, or a plain operating system without a panel. Paid panel licences are an extra cost and, under the refund policy, are not refundable.
