Password Managers: our picks in detail

1. RoboForm: Best Overall

Our score
9.8/10 · Best Overall
Free plan
Yes (1 device)
Price
A$1.42

Why we picked it

RoboForm earns its place at the top of our ranking by doing the everyday jobs of a password manager very well: it saves and fills logins reliably, it fills long forms better than anything else we know of, and it protects your vault with a zero-knowledge design that has been independently tested. Its weaknesses are real but narrow, mostly about the desktop app and sharing flexibility. If you have more than one device, Premium or Family is where it makes sense, and the 30-day money-back guarantee gives you room to decide.

Pros

  • Exceptional web form filling
  • Highly affordable premium plans
  • Strong zero-knowledge encryption
  • Excellent passkey support included

Cons

  • Outdated desktop app design
  • Very restrictive free tier

2. NordPass: Value Bundle

Our score
9.5/10 · Great
Free plan
Yes (1 device)
Price
A$2.29

Why we picked it

NordPass gets the fundamentals right: strong, well-documented encryption, a zero-knowledge model, passkey support and apps that are pleasant to use on every major platform. Its paid tiers add protective tools that ordinary users will actually benefit from, and the Family plan is a sensible way to get a whole household onto proper password hygiene. The free tier is a fair way to try it, as long as you accept the one-device limit. For most individuals and families, it is an easy recommendation.

Pros

  • Modern XChaCha20 encryption
  • Fast autofill and passkeys
  • Good value with Nord bundles
  • Data-breach scanner

Cons

  • Fewer advanced features
  • Free tier limits active device

3. Keeper: Business Users

Our score
9.3/10 · Very Good
Free plan
No (trial)
Price
A$2.39

Why we picked it

For businesses, and for families and individuals who put security first, yes. Keeper combines a clearly documented zero-knowledge design, a long list of certifications, independent penetration testing and an open bug bounty with clean apps and excellent sharing. Its admin controls are among the most complete in the category, which is why it stands out for business users. Budget for the add-ons you need, use the free trial to check that autofill works on the sites you use most, and Keeper is a strong long-term home for your passwords.

Pros

  • Robust admin and compliance controls
  • Strong encryption
  • Secure file storage add-on
  • Reliable cross-platform apps

Cons

  • Add-ons increase the price
  • Setup is more involved

4. 1Password: Most Polished Apps

Our score
8.8/10 · Very Good
Free plan
No (14-day trial)
Price
A$4.54

Why we picked it

1Password is worth paying for if you want a password manager you and your family will actually use. Its Secret Key design, independent audits and certifications give it a strong security record, and its apps, Watchtower alerts, passkey support and Travel Mode are among the best implemented in the category. Start with the 14-day trial, save your Emergency Kit, and choose the Families plan if more than one person in the household needs it. If cost is the deciding factor, a free alternative will serve you better.

Pros

  • Beautiful, reliable apps on every platform
  • Travel Mode and Watchtower breach alerts
  • Full passkey support
  • Great family and team plans

Cons

  • No free tier
  • Slightly pricier than rivals

5. Dashlane: Smooth Autofill

Our score
8.4/10 · Good
Free plan
No
Price
A$3.57

Why we picked it

Dashlane is a polished, easy password manager with useful extras, and it suits people who value a smooth experience over the lowest possible price. It has real limits: no free tier, annual-only billing, and a recent incident that showed how much depends on a strong master password. For buyers who want vault, autofill, breach alerts, phishing warnings and a basic VPN under one roof, it remains one of the most complete subscriptions available.

Pros

  • Strong dark-web monitoring
  • VPN included on Premium
  • Smooth autofill
  • Clear security dashboard

Cons

  • No desktop app (browser-first)
  • Higher price point

Independent security audits

A security audit or penetration test is an outside firm trying to break a product and reporting what it found. The table lists the most recent audit each company has published for anyone to read, checked on 5 October 2026. Certifications such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001 check a company's internal controls rather than the app itself, so they are noted separately and not counted as a public audit.

Latest publicly available security audits, checked 5 October 2026

RoboFormSecfault SecurityGrey-box penetration test of the Windows and macOS apps, Android and iOS apps, Chrome, Edge and Firefox extensions, online portal and password generator (20 person-days)Tested 26 August to 20 September 2024, retests to 12 February 2025; summary dated 13 February 2025Secfault summary (PDF)

KeeperNo public audit found. Keeper's documentation says it runs third-party penetration tests with NCC Group and Cybertest and gives report summaries to Enterprise customers on request, and lists ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 and SOC 2 (Keeper documentation).
1PasswordIndependent Security Evaluators (ISE)Penetration test and code review of the 1Password systemApril to June 2020ISE report (PDF)
DashlaneNo public audit found. Dashlane's security page points readers to its Trust Center for compliance documents (Dashlane security).

1Password says that since 3 November 2025 its annual penetration test reports are distributed through its Trust Center rather than published openly, and that it holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications (1Password security audits page). NordPass lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2 on its security page.

A published audit shows that an outside firm examined the product at a point in time and that the company was willing to show the result; it does not prove the product is free of flaws today, and an older report says little about features added since.

How we rate password managers

Security comes first, then everyday usability and value.

  • Security (40%): encryption model, audits, breach history, passkeys.
  • Usability (30%): autofill reliability, apps and browser extensions.
  • Features (15%): sharing, monitoring, emergency access.
  • Value (15%): free tier, individual and family pricing.

Why use a password manager?

It removes the temptation to reuse passwords, warns you about breaches and weak credentials, and makes signing in faster everywhere. Most now also store passkeys, the passwordless standard that is replacing logins in 2026.

Buyer's guide

Look for zero-knowledge encryption, an independent security audit, passkey support, secure sharing, and breach monitoring. Open-source options add transparency; family plans add value if you have several people to cover.

What users rate them

User ratings show how people who chose to leave a review felt about a company or app. They are useful for spotting patterns, such as repeated complaints about billing, renewals or support, but they are not a measure of how well a product works: happy customers review less often than unhappy ones, some companies invite reviews more actively than others, and a score built on a few dozen reviews can move a lot with a handful more.

Trustpilot rates the company behind a product, usually for all of its products and services, and often reflects buying and billing experiences. Apple App Store ratings cover one iPhone and iPad app in the US store, so they say little about a desktop or web version. An App Store rating is shown only when the app is published by the vendor itself. The two scores come from different groups of reviewers and are not combined here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are password managers safe?

Reputable managers use zero-knowledge encryption, meaning even the provider cannot read your vault. The main risk is a weak master password, so make that long and unique.

What happens if I forget my master password?

Because of zero-knowledge design, most providers cannot reset it. Set up the recovery options (recovery key, emergency contacts) when you sign up.

Is a free password manager good enough?

Free tiers like Bitwarden are excellent for individuals. Paid plans add family sharing, advanced 2FA and breach monitoring.

What are passkeys?

Passkeys are a passwordless login standard that uses your device biometrics. The best managers now store and sync passkeys across your devices.

Can I switch managers later?

Yes. All the managers we recommend let you import from a CSV or directly from another manager, so switching takes only a few minutes.
