Rippling review: our verdict

This Rippling review looks at a platform that does something few payroll providers attempt: it runs payroll, HR, IT and finance tools from one employee database, so a change made once ripples through every connected system. Hire someone and Rippling can set up their payroll record, benefits enrolment, laptop and app accounts in one flow; let someone go and it can cut off access and run their final pay. That unified design, plus native global payroll, is why we rank Rippling as the best all-in-one option in our payroll comparison.

The trade-offs are complexity and price transparency. Rippling sells each product as a module on top of a required core platform, prices by quote, and does not publish a price list. Several reviewers also say it can be more than a very small business needs, and that reaching support by phone is not as easy as with traditional payroll providers.

NerdBible did not run its own hands-on trial for this review. It is an editorial assessment based on Rippling's own payroll, pricing, global, IT, PEO and security pages, and on the published findings of independent review outlets, which we credit and link below. This review describes the software; it is not tax, legal or employment advice.

What is Rippling and who is it for?

Rippling is a cloud workforce platform. At its centre is a single record for every employee and contractor, and on top of that sit products you choose: US and global payroll, benefits administration, time and attendance, recruiting, learning and performance, device and identity management, expenses and corporate cards. Because every product reads from the same record, Rippling argues on its payroll page that data flows automatically without the manual re-entry that comes with stitched-together systems.

It is a strong fit for:

  • Fast-growing companies. Start with payroll and HR, then add IT, finance or global modules as headcount grows.
  • Distributed and international teams. Rippling pays employees and contractors abroad from the same system.
  • Businesses without a dedicated IT person. Device management and app provisioning can be tied directly to hiring and departures.

It is a weaker fit for a tiny business that only needs to pay a handful of local employees and has no interest in the wider platform.

Key features

US payroll

Rippling's payroll page says new hires, salary changes and benefits deductions flow from HR straight into payroll, and that the system calculates payroll taxes and files them with the relevant federal, state and local agencies. Before you approve a run you can compare it with previous runs to catch changes in gross pay, deductions and taxes. You can process payroll as often as you need at no extra charge, create custom pay types, control who can view and approve pay runs, and sync to accounting systems including Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite. Current and former employees can view pay stubs and tax forms themselves.

Global payroll and employer of record

The Rippling global payroll page describes paying employees and contractors worldwide in their local currency from the same system, with payroll taxes calculated and filed for international staff, and hours, time off and deductions synced from one place. Where you have no local entity, Rippling also offers an employer of record service. Business News Daily reports contractor payments in more than 185 countries and over 50 currencies.

IT: devices, apps and identity

Rippling's device management page describes lifecycle automation for Apple and Windows devices, custom security policies based on user and device attributes, real-time views of each machine and automated threat alerts, with SentinelOne endpoint protection integrated. The same employee record drives which apps a person can access, so access changes when a role changes. For companies without an IT department, this is the feature that sets Rippling furthest apart from payroll-only rivals.

Workflows, policies and reporting

Rippling describes a workflow builder with custom triggers and actions, custom policies that enforce your own rules, and a report builder that draws on HR, payroll, IT and finance data together. Fit Small Business found the workflow tool approachable, comparing its conditional logic to spreadsheet formulas.

Rippling PEO

The Rippling PEO page describes access to larger-company benefits packages, compliance filings, employment practices liability and workers' compensation coverage, and consultations with certified HR experts. Rippling says you can later move off the PEO and keep using the same underlying platform.

How much does Rippling cost? Plans and pricing structure

Our comparison table shows the latest pricing information we hold. Rippling itself does not publish prices: the Rippling pricing page asks you which services you need and sends a custom quote. The structure it describes is:

  • A core Rippling Platform, which is required.
  • Individual products such as Payroll, Benefits, Expenses and Device Management, each bought separately on top of the platform.
  • Most products billed per employee, per month, with some charging or including a monthly base fee.
  • Separate services for global payroll, employer of record and PEO.

The modular approach means you only pay for what you use, but it also means the total depends heavily on how many modules you add. Business News Daily and TechRepublic both flag the lack of published pricing, and our own listing notes that modular pricing adds up. Get an itemised quote and ask how it will change as you add employees or modules.

Is Rippling safe? Security and privacy

The Rippling security page lists SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports audited annually, a public SOC 3 report, ISO 27001, ISO 27018 and ISO 42001 certifications, and CSA STAR Level 2. Rippling says data is housed in US-based AWS data centres across multiple availability zones, that all app access is logged and audited, that it runs a web application firewall and runtime protection, and that independent firms run internal and external penetration tests alongside a public bug bounty programme. Employees are background-checked and trained, and the company says it complies with GDPR and CCPA.

For admins, PCMag notes that Rippling supports multi-factor authentication, and the same permission system that controls payroll access also governs devices and apps.

Customer support

Business News Daily and Fit Small Business both describe live chat and email support as the main channels, with a paid HR Help Desk add-on for one-on-one help from HR professionals. PCMag highlights a public support status page that shows live chat response times, which is unusual transparency. TechRadar found it harder than it should be to reach a person by phone, and Fit Small Business recommends providers with free phone support if that matters to you.

Switching to Rippling mid-year

A common worry is whether you can change payroll provider part way through the year. Rippling's pricing page says you do not have to wait: its team picks up payroll where your previous provider left off, importing and analysing your year-to-date payroll records so that filings continue without interruption. PCMag describes a long but well-organised setup checklist covering company details, pay schedules, bank connection and benefits choices, with tasks and deadlines generated from your answers. Plan the switch for a quiet pay period and run a careful comparison of your first Rippling pay run against the last one from your old provider.

What could be better

  • No public pricing. You need a sales conversation to learn what you will pay.
  • Modular costs add up. Each extra product raises the per-employee price.
  • Phone support is limited. Chat is fast by most accounts, but phone help may cost extra.
  • Breadth can overwhelm. PCMag notes that a very small business may find more fields and options than it needs.
  • Interface languages. TechRepublic reported only a small number of interface languages, which may matter for global staff; check the current list.

Who should choose something else?

If you have a few local employees, no plans to hire abroad and no need for device or app management, a simpler payroll service with published pricing will probably cost less and be quicker to set up. If your team needs to call a payroll specialist whenever something comes up, consider providers that include phone support by default. Whichever route you take, an accountant can confirm your own payroll and filing obligations.

Is Rippling worth it? Bottom line

Rippling is worth it for companies that want one system for people operations rather than a payroll app plus several separate tools. Its unified employee record, automation, global payroll and built-in IT management are genuinely distinctive, and its security credentials are extensive. Smaller businesses should weigh that breadth against the cost of the modules they would actually use, and insist on an itemised quote before signing.

What other reviewers found

  • PCMag gave Rippling an Editors' Choice for its usability, depth and customisability, noting it suits companies with hundreds of staff while warning that its HR and IT scope may overwhelm very small firms.
  • TechRadar liked the lean, fast interface and the breadth of core HR tools, but found support harder to reach than it should be, with chat and a form rather than an obvious phone line.
  • TechRepublic called it an excellent choice for growing small businesses, praising native global payroll, while criticising opaque pricing and limited interface languages.
  • Business News Daily rated onboarding and the user interface highly and highlighted global payroll, but listed the lack of online pricing and the cost for small firms as drawbacks.
  • Fit Small Business ranked it top among HRIS tools for small businesses but deducted points for ease of use because phone support is not included.

Where they agree: every outlet praises the breadth of the platform and its global payroll, and almost every one flags either pricing transparency or support access. Where they differ: TechRepublic and Business News Daily present Rippling as an easy fit for small businesses, while PCMag and TechRadar see it at its best in larger organisations. What it means for you: the size of your company matters less than how many of Rippling's modules you will use. If you will use payroll, HR and IT together, the platform pays for itself in saved admin; if you only need payroll, compare it against simpler services.

Frequently asked questions

How is Rippling priced?

Rippling does not publish a price list. According to its pricing page, you buy a required core platform plus whichever products you need, such as payroll, benefits or device management. Most products are billed per employee per month, and some carry or include a monthly base fee. You request a custom quote based on the services and headcount you need.

Can Rippling pay international employees?

Yes. Rippling's global payroll page describes paying employees and contractors worldwide in their local currency from the same system as US payroll, with payroll taxes calculated and filed for international staff. If you have no local entity, its employer of record service can employ people on your behalf. Independent reviewers report coverage in well over a hundred countries.

Is Rippling good for small businesses?

It can be, particularly for small businesses that expect to grow, hire remotely or need help managing laptops and app access. Reviewers praise how easy onboarding and workflows are. A very small business with simple local payroll may find the platform broader than it needs, so compare an itemised Rippling quote with a payroll-only service.

Is Rippling secure?

Rippling's security page lists annual SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 audits, a public SOC 3 report, ISO 27001, 27018 and 42001 certifications and CSA STAR Level 2. It says data sits in US-based AWS data centres across multiple availability zones, access is logged and audited, and independent penetration tests and a bug bounty programme are in place.

Does Rippling offer phone support?

Reviewers describe live chat and email as Rippling's main support channels, with a paid HR Help Desk add-on for direct help from HR professionals. PCMag highlights Rippling's public dashboard of chat response times. Fit Small Business and TechRadar both note that phone support is less accessible than at traditional payroll providers, so ask about it when you request a quote.
