Guitar & Instrument Tuner

Tune a guitar, bass, ukulele or violin with your microphone, or tune chromatically.

Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.

Press Start and allow the microphone.

Hz

Your microphone is analysed live in this tab only. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded, and the microphone closes when you press Stop or leave the page. For the best reading, play one string at a time, close to the microphone, in a quiet room.

How to use it

  1. Choose your instrument, or Chromatic for any note.
  2. Press Start and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  3. Play one string and let it ring. Tighten the string if the needle sits left of centre (flat), loosen it if it sits right (sharp), until it turns green.

Questions

Why does the tuner show nothing?

It ignores quiet sound so the needle does not wander in silence. Play the string a little harder or move closer to the microphone. If it still shows nothing, check the browser has permission to use the microphone and that the right microphone is selected in your system settings.

What does cents mean?

A cent is a hundredth of a semitone. Within about 5 cents most people cannot hear a difference, which is when the display turns green.

When would I change the reference A4?

Most music today is tuned to A4 = 440 Hz. Some orchestras tune a little higher, around 442 Hz, and baroque ensembles often use 415 Hz. Match the reference to the band or recording you play with.

How do the reference buttons help?

Each string button plays its target note, so you can tune by ear, or check the microphone is picking up the right string.
