Polling rate estimate

Move the mouse quickly in circles inside this box

 Estimated rate now
 Highest estimate

The polling rate is an estimate from the timing of the movement events your browser hands to the page. Browsers can bundle or slow these events, so the true rate of the mouse may be higher; a 1000 Hz mouse often reads somewhat lower here. The best score is kept in this browser only.

How to use it

  1. Point at the mouse picture and press each button in turn, then roll the wheel up and down. Each part turns black while pressed and grey once it has worked.
  2. Watch the chattering box: a worn switch can turn one click into two, which shows up here as two clicks less than 80 ms apart.
  3. Choose 5 or 10 seconds and click the big box as fast as you can for a clicks per second score, then move the mouse in the last box for a polling rate estimate.

Questions

What is double click chattering?

A worn or dirty switch can bounce and send two clicks for one press. Clicking normally, people rarely manage two clicks less than 80 ms apart, so a pair that fast during single clicks points to the switch.

Why does Back or Forward not light up?

Some mice send those buttons as keyboard shortcuts through their own software, and some browsers or systems take them before the page sees them. If the buttons work in other programs, check the mouse software settings.

Is the polling rate exact?

No, it is an estimate. The page can only see the movement events the browser delivers, and browsers may group them to match the screen refresh. Moving fast and steadily gives the best reading.

What is a good clicks per second score?

Most people land somewhere between 6 and 9 clicks per second with normal clicking. Techniques like jitter or butterfly clicking go higher.
