Our verdict
This Zoho Books review covers the accounting app at the centre of Zoho's large suite of business software. Zoho Books offers an unusually deep feature set for its price, a genuinely usable free plan for very small businesses, and tight links to Zoho CRM, Zoho Inventory, Zoho Payroll and dozens of other Zoho apps. Independent reviewers praise its depth, customisation and mobile apps. The recurring criticisms are that it can feel complex for a very small business, some useful tools cost extra as add-ons, and user reviews of customer support are mixed.
NerdBible has not tested Zoho Books hands-on for this review. This is an editorial assessment based on Zoho's own pricing, feature and security pages and on independent reviews and user ratings.
What is Zoho Books and who is it for?
Zoho Books is cloud accounting software from Zoho, a company that sells a wide range of business applications, from CRM and help desk to HR and email. Zoho Books handles invoicing, bills, bank reconciliation, projects, inventory and reporting, and it is published in localised editions for many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Germany, France, Mexico, South Africa, Singapore and several Gulf states. Each edition is set up for local tax rules and language.
It suits two kinds of buyer especially well. The first is a business that already uses Zoho CRM or other Zoho apps and wants accounting that shares the same customers, products and users. The second is a growing small business that wants room to scale: Zoho's tiers run from a free plan for solo owners to plans with advanced inventory, revenue recognition and many users. PCMag goes further, describing Zoho Books as suitable for midsize companies on its top tiers.
Key features
- Receivables. Quotes, invoices, sales orders, retainers and progress invoices, with multicurrency and multilingual invoicing, recurring invoices, payment links and a self-service customer portal. Zoho Books can send automated payment reminders.
- Payables. Bills, expenses, purchase orders and approvals, with a vendor portal on higher plans and a bill-pay add-on in some editions.
- Banking. Bank feeds and reconciliation, with AI help to categorise bank statements.
- Projects and time. Timesheets, project budgets, task billing and project profitability, available from the Professional plan.
- Inventory. Item tracking from the Professional plan, and full inventory control with warehouses and composite items on the Elite plan. Zoho also says Books can sync stock levels with online channels such as Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Shopify and Zoho Commerce.
- Workflow automation and customisation. Custom fields, custom modules, custom buttons, validation rules, workflow rules and Blueprints for multi-step processes. PCMag says Zoho Books outperforms competitors in supporting custom fields.
- Reports. More than seventy built-in and customisable reports, including profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheet, plus budgeting and cash flow forecasting on higher plans.
- AI features. Zoho's assistant, Zia, answers questions in plain English and can carry out tasks; Zoho also says Books flags unusual changes in report data and can connect to outside AI agents through MCP.
- Payroll. Zoho Payroll integrates with Books in the editions where it is available, including the United States, India and Saudi Arabia.
Native apps are available for desktop, iOS, Android and even smartwatches, and PCMag calls the mobile apps excellent.
How much does Zoho Books cost?
Our page shows current prices from our own data. Zoho Books is priced per organisation, not per user, and each tier includes a set number of users.
- Free: for solo owners and micro-businesses below a revenue threshold set on the pricing page, with one user plus an accountant, invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation, a customer portal and email support.
- Standard: three users, adding bank feeds, custom fields and reports, recurring expenses and API access.
- Professional: five users, adding purchase and sales orders, multicurrency, timesheets, project profitability, inventory tracking and approvals.
- Premium: ten users, adding basic revenue recognition, fixed assets, budgets, cash flow forecasting, a vendor portal and custom modules.
- Elite and Ultimate: ten and fifteen users respectively, adding advanced inventory with warehouses and composite items, advanced revenue recognition and dashboard customisation.
Each plan also has a yearly cap on the number of invoices and bills it can create, rising steeply with each tier; the free plan's caps are generous for a micro-business. Extra users can be added for a fee. Annual billing costs less than monthly. Some tools, such as automatic receipt scanning beyond the included amount, are paid add-ons, which PCMag says makes the true cost harder to work out. Zoho offers a 14-day free trial of the paid plans.
Is Zoho Books safe?
Zoho's security page says all customer data sent over public networks is protected with TLS 1.2 or 1.3, with perfect forward secrecy and HTTP Strict Transport Security enabled, and that sensitive data at rest is encrypted with 256-bit AES using keys managed by Zoho's own key management service. Zoho says it runs its own servers in co-located data centres with restricted, logged access. Within Zoho Books, user roles control what each person can see, and a tamper-proof audit trail records who changed what and when. Zoho's feature page also mentions HIPAA and PCI compliance support for Zoho Books.
What is Zoho Books' customer support like?
Zoho's pricing page says basic support is available on all plans: the free plan gets email support, and paid plans add voice and chat. US support hours are listed as weekdays during extended business hours, Eastern time. Reviews of support are mixed. TechRadar lists good support among its strengths, while NerdWallet notes that user reviews describe Zoho's customer service as poor and says it has room to improve. If fast phone support matters to you, test it during the trial.
What could be better
- Complexity. PCMag says Zoho Books can be too complex for many small businesses that want a simpler, focused tool.
- Add-ons. Some features, such as receipt autoscans beyond the included allowance and bill pay, cost extra.
- Time tracking is tied to projects. PCMag notes that timesheets are locked to projects.
- Fewer third-party integrations. NerdWallet points out that Zoho Books has fewer non-Zoho integrations than some competitors, although its links to Zoho's own apps are extensive.
- Mixed support reviews. User feedback on support quality is inconsistent.
Who should choose something else?
If you are a freelancer whose main job is billing clients for time, FreshBooks offers a simpler, more focused experience. If your business depends on a particular third-party app ecosystem outside Zoho, check that Zoho Books integrates with the tools you rely on before switching. If you need payroll in a country where Zoho Payroll is not available, plan for a separate payroll provider. And if you only need to calculate and file indirect taxes for online sales, a tax-compliance tool such as Quaderno may complement, rather than replace, your accounting software. An accountant can advise on the set-up that fits your business.
Is Zoho Books worth it?
For businesses that already use Zoho, or that want accounting with room to grow, Zoho Books is excellent value. It offers more automation, customisation and reporting than most rivals at each price point, the free plan is genuinely useful, and the user allowances are generous compared with per-user competitors. That is why we list it as the pick for businesses on the Zoho stack. Its learning curve and add-on costs are real, and very small service businesses may prefer something simpler. Use the 14-day trial to check the workflows you will rely on most.
What other reviewers found
- PCMag praised the depth and flexibility of every module, its customisable forms, reporting and mobile apps, but said it is too complex for many small businesses and that some features need add-ons.
- NerdWallet gave it 5 out of 5, highlighting the free plan and the wider Zoho suite, while noting fewer third-party integrations and weak support in user reviews.
- TechRadar called it one of the better value packages of its type, easy to use with impressive apps, but listed a lack of payroll and limits for larger organisations as drawbacks.
- On Capterra, verified users rate it about 4.4 out of 5, crediting bank feeds, automation and value, while some find the mobile app less capable than the web version and report customisation awkward.
The outlets agree that Zoho Books is feature-rich and good value, and that its integration with other Zoho apps is a major strength. They disagree on two points. On complexity, PCMag warns small businesses that it may be too much, while TechRadar and NerdWallet find it easy to use. On scale, TechRadar sees limits for larger organisations, while PCMag says the top tiers can serve midsize companies. Part of that gap is timing: TechRadar's payroll criticism predates the Zoho Payroll integration now listed on Zoho's own pages. For a buyer, the sensible reading is that Zoho Books scales well if you are willing to invest time in setting it up, and that support is worth testing before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zoho Books really free?
Yes, for very small businesses. Zoho's pricing page says the free plan is available indefinitely as long as your revenue for the financial year stays below the threshold it sets. The free plan includes one user plus an accountant, invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation and a customer portal, with yearly limits on invoices and expenses. Most add-ons are not available on the free plan.
Does Zoho Books integrate with Zoho CRM?
Yes. Zoho Books is designed to work with other Zoho apps, including Zoho CRM, Zoho Inventory and Zoho Payroll, so customers, products and transactions can be shared across them. Reviewers name this integration as one of Zoho Books' main advantages. Its range of third-party integrations outside the Zoho ecosystem is smaller than some rivals, according to NerdWallet.
Does Zoho Books handle inventory?
Yes. Inventory tracking starts on the Professional plan, and the Elite plan adds advanced inventory control with warehouses and composite items. Zoho says Books can sync stock levels with online sales channels such as Amazon, Etsy, eBay and Shopify. PCMag notes that some advanced inventory features, such as assemblies, rely on Zoho Inventory, which is priced separately.
How many users does Zoho Books include?
Zoho Books prices per organisation and includes a set number of users in each plan: one user plus an accountant on the free plan, three on Standard, five on Professional, ten on Premium and Elite, and fifteen on Ultimate. Extra users can be added for a fee. This is more generous than rivals that charge for every additional person.
Is there a Zoho Books free trial?
Yes. Zoho says you can try the paid plans free for 14 days before subscribing, and the free plan can be used indefinitely by businesses under its revenue threshold. During the trial, test the features you will use most, such as bank feeds, invoicing and reports, and contact support once to see how quickly it responds.
