Our verdict
This Preply review looks at one of the largest marketplaces for live, one-to-one online tutoring. Preply is not a course or an app that teaches you by itself. It connects you with an independent tutor, gives you a virtual classroom to meet in, and bills you for a regular number of lessons with that person. It is strongest for languages, with tens of thousands of English and Spanish tutors alone, but it covers more than a hundred subjects.
That human element is why Preply is our pick for live tutoring on our language learning ranking. Speaking regularly with a real person who corrects you is something no app can fully replicate, and Preply's search filters, intro videos and reviews make it easy to find a tutor at a price and time that suit you. The weak spots are commercial rather than educational: lessons are sold only as auto-renewing 28-day subscriptions per tutor, trial lessons are paid, late cancellations forfeit the lesson, and refunds are discretionary. Tutor quality varies, as it does on any open marketplace.
NerdBible did not take lessons on Preply for this review. It is an editorial assessment based on Preply's own website and help centre, and on published reviews from PCMag, Fluent in 3 Months, KotoEnglish and Trustpilot users.
What is Preply and who is it for?
Preply's homepage describes a platform with more than 100,000 tutors from more than 180 nationalities teaching over 120 subjects, with tutor counts shown per language. Its how it works page sets out three steps: find a tutor using intro videos and reviews, book a 25-minute or 50-minute trial lesson in Preply's virtual classroom, then subscribe to a lesson plan. You can switch tutors at any time. Preply also sells corporate language training to employers.
Preply suits:
- Learners who need to speak, such as people relocating, preparing for job interviews, or who have studied with apps but freeze in conversation.
- People with specific goals, such as business English or exam preparation, who want a tutor who specialises in that.
- Learners of less common languages, since tutors list whatever they teach and PCMag found tutors for many rarely taught languages.
- Anyone on a budget who still wants a human, because tutors set their own rates and the price range is wide.
Key features
Finding a tutor
Each tutor profile carries a biography, a short video, reviews and an average reply time. You can filter by price, availability, native language, the other languages a tutor speaks and specialities. Preply's help article on evaluating tutors explains two signals worth using. Only students who have paid for a lesson with a tutor can review them. And a blue shield next to a tutor's name means Preply has cross-checked the profile against documents to confirm identity and verify educational background. Not every tutor has that badge, so check for it if credentials matter to you.
Trial lessons and the free replacement
According to Preply's help article on booking a trial lesson, a trial is a paid 25-minute or 50-minute lesson, limited to one per tutor, that typically covers introductions, your goals, a short level check, a sample activity and a suggested plan. If the trial disappoints, Preply's replacement policy gives you a free trial with a different tutor, up to two replacements per account. Replacements end once you subscribe to that tutor. If a tutor simply fails to show up, that is handled separately, with no limit.
Classroom and practice tools
Lessons happen in Preply Classroom, a browser and app video space. Between lessons, Preply offers lesson insights showing what to work on next, daily exercises and personalised vocabulary, plus messaging with your tutor. Preply also cites an internal efficiency study in its marketing; that is the company's own research, so weigh it accordingly.
Beyond the major languages
Because any qualified tutor can list what they teach, Preply's catalogue goes well beyond the usual European and Asian languages. PCMag reported finding tutors for languages such as Burmese, Georgian, Icelandic and Mongolian, as well as American Sign Language tutors through a search, and noted tutors for non-language subjects such as maths and computer science. Employers can also buy Preply's corporate training, which offers personalised lessons with online tutors for teams, and learners can ask their employer to pay through a referral page.
How much does Preply cost?
Our product card shows current figures from our own data, so this section covers the structure. Each tutor sets their own rate, and PCMag noted that rates vary widely, often lower where tutors' living costs are lower. After the trial, you pay through a subscription, and Preply's help article on how subscriptions work spells out the rules:
- A subscription is between you and one tutor. A second tutor means a second subscription.
- You are charged automatically every 28 days, so your renewal date moves through the calendar rather than falling on the same date each month.
- The minimum plan is four lessons per cycle. You can change the number of lessons or split time into shorter sessions.
- Single lessons cannot be bought, even through customer support.
- You can pause renewal or cancel at any time, with no cancellation fee, and keep lessons already paid for until the cycle ends.
Preply's help centre also explains how its commission model works: Preply keeps the whole fee for a tutor's first trial lesson with each new student and a sliding percentage of later lessons. That explains why the trial is the step where Preply offers its free replacement.
Cancellations, refunds and support
Three policies shape your experience more than anything else. First, the cancellation policy: cancel a lesson more than 12 hours before it starts and it returns to your balance; cancel later and the lesson is lost and the tutor is paid. Second, refunds: Preply may refund a charge if you cancel your subscription and have used no lessons from that cycle, and you ask within 28 days. Each request is reviewed individually, cancelling does not trigger a refund automatically, and money can take up to 30 days to reach your account. Third, support runs through chat in the website or app.
The practical takeaway: choose a lesson frequency you can actually keep, put your renewal date in your calendar, and ask for any refund quickly if you stop before using a cycle's lessons.
What could be better
- Subscription only. There is no way to buy a one-off lesson, which suits regular learners but not occasional ones.
- Paid trials. Each trial costs money, and free replacements are capped at two.
- Strict late-cancellation rule. Less than 12 hours' notice means the lesson is gone.
- Uneven tutor quality. Vetting is lighter than at a language school, and the verified badge is not universal.
- Discretionary refunds that depend on timing and lesson use.
- Mixed support experiences reported by a minority of customers.
Who should choose something else
If your schedule is unpredictable and you can only commit to the odd lesson, a pay-per-lesson tutoring marketplace will fit better than a 28-day subscription. Complete beginners who are not yet ready to speak may get more from a structured app, such as Mondly on our ranking, before adding a tutor. Learners who want a fixed curriculum with certificates, or small group classes that cost less per hour, should look at course-based providers. And if a parent is booking for a child, review the tutor's profile, verification and reviews carefully before the first lesson.
What other reviewers found
- PCMag rated Preply 4 out of 5, praising the professional video sessions, the huge range of languages and the tools for filtering tutors by certificate and rating, while noting that tutoring still costs more than group classes.
- Fluent in 3 Months rated it excellent and found every tutor sampled across several languages remarkably effective, with its main complaints about package flexibility and placement tests.
- KotoEnglish, an English tutoring company, liked the tutor choice and classroom tools but said automatic renewals and expiring lessons can catch out learners with irregular schedules.
- On Trustpilot, tens of thousands of reviews average well above four stars, with praise for tutors and flexibility, and complaints about tutor no-shows, subscription confusion and slow support from a sizeable minority.
Where they agree and disagree. Reviewers agree almost unanimously that the tutors and the choice are the reason to use Preply. Where they differ is the billing model, and the timing of each review matters. Some older write-ups describe lesson packages, free trials and the option of buying a single lesson through support; Preply's current help centre says trials are paid, single lessons are no longer sold, and everything runs on 28-day subscriptions. Newer reviews are correspondingly more critical of the billing. For a buyer, that means judging Preply on its current terms: excellent for regular learners who will use every lesson, less forgiving for anyone whose week is unpredictable.
Bottom line: is Preply worth it?
Preply is worth it if you want to speak a language with confidence and can commit to regular lessons. The tutor pool, filters and reviews make it easier than almost anywhere else to find a good match at a price you choose, and the free trial replacement takes some of the risk out of the first meeting. Go in with clear eyes about the subscription mechanics: one tutor per plan, automatic renewal every 28 days, a 12-hour cancellation rule and refunds only in limited cases.
Frequently asked questions
How does Preply work?
You browse tutor profiles with videos and reviews, book a paid trial lesson of 25 or 50 minutes, then subscribe to a plan with that tutor if it goes well. Lessons take place in Preply's online classroom. Subscriptions renew automatically every 28 days, with a minimum of four lessons per cycle, and you can change, pause or cancel your plan.
Is the Preply trial lesson free?
No. Preply's help centre says trial lessons are paid lessons, limited to one per tutor. If the trial does not meet your expectations, you can request a free replacement trial with a different tutor, up to two replacements per account. If a tutor fails to attend, that is handled through a separate support process with no limit on how often it applies.
Can I cancel Preply at any time?
Yes. Preply says there is no cancellation fee and no lock-in, and you keep lessons already paid for until the current 28-day cycle ends. Cancelling stops future charges but does not refund past ones automatically. Refunds may be granted if you used no lessons from that cycle and ask within 28 days of the charge.
Are Preply tutors qualified?
Qualifications vary because Preply is an open marketplace. Profiles show experience, reviews from paying students and, for some tutors, a blue verification shield meaning Preply has checked identity and educational documents. PCMag found it easy to filter for tutors with teaching certificates. Use the trial lesson to judge teaching style for yourself.
What happens if I miss a Preply lesson?
If you cancel more than 12 hours before the lesson starts, it returns to your balance and can be rebooked. If you cancel later or do not attend, the lesson is not returned and the tutor is paid, because the time was reserved in their calendar. Tutors can sometimes reschedule within the window if both sides agree.
