Freshsales review: our verdict

This Freshsales review looks at the sales CRM from Freshworks, the company also known for Freshdesk, and asks whether it is the right first proper CRM for a young sales team. For many startups and small businesses it is. Freshsales puts email, phone, chat and messaging inside the contact record, keeps its interface clean enough that new reps can find their way quickly, and uses its Freddy AI to score contacts and flag deals that need attention. That combination is why we rank it as the best CRM for startups.

There are trade-offs. The most useful selling tools (contact scoring, deal insights, sequences and territory management) start on the middle tier rather than the entry plan, the native integration catalogue is smaller than the market leaders', and the free plan that many older reviews still mention no longer appears on the Freshsales pricing page. Today the free route in is a 21-day trial.

NerdBible did not run its own hands-on trial for this review. It is an editorial assessment based on Freshworks' own pricing, features and security pages, and on the published findings of independent review outlets, which we credit and link below.

What is Freshsales and who is it for?

Freshsales is a cloud CRM built around the day-to-day work of salespeople: logging calls and emails, moving deals through a pipeline, following up on time and knowing which leads to prioritise. Freshworks also sells Freshsales Suite, which adds marketing automation tools such as journeys, segments and landing pages to the same customer record.

It suits three kinds of buyer well:

  • Startups building their first sales process. The layout is uncluttered, and the Freshsales pricing page positions the entry Growth plan for startups and small businesses.
  • Phone-heavy sales teams. Calling is built into the CRM rather than bolted on, so call logs and recordings land on the contact record automatically.
  • Teams already using Freshdesk. Two-way contact sync lets sales see support tickets, which helps avoid pitching a customer in the middle of a complaint.

Freshworks' Freshsales product page frames the product around three jobs: generating and qualifying leads, giving reps a decluttered daily view of their pipeline with drag-and-drop Kanban cards, and automating repetitive tasks so that more of the day goes on selling. It also confirms the trial terms: 21 days, with no credit card required. That makes it easy to put the product in front of the actual people who will use it before anyone signs a contract, which is the single best way to judge whether a CRM will be adopted.

It is a weaker fit for businesses that depend on a long list of niche third-party apps, and for anyone who specifically wants a permanently free CRM.

Key features

Built-in email, phone, chat and messaging

The Freshsales features page lists email sending and tracking from a connected inbox, one-click calling with call logs and recordings, website chat, WhatsApp Business, Apple Business Chat and SMS through your SMS provider. Business.com adds that you can bring an existing business number or buy local, toll-free and vanity numbers, and that call transcription and IVR routing are available. For a small team, having all of this in one place removes a separate phone system and a lot of copying and pasting.

Contact records and timelines

Each contact gets a customisable summary, a details section that pulls in data across modules and apps, an activity timeline across channels, and automatic profile enrichment from publicly listed information. Custom fields, including formula fields, custom modules and lifecycle stages let you shape the record to your own sales process.

Freddy AI

Freshworks says Freddy AI scores contacts from historical data, highlights deals worth focusing on, detects duplicates and spots out-of-office replies so you can reschedule follow-ups. The pricing page places contact scoring and deal insights on the Pro plan and forecasting insights on Enterprise. A customer-facing Freddy AI Agent for chatbots is sold separately in session packs, and Freshworks says every paid plan gets a one-time allowance of 500 sessions to try it.

Pipelines, sequences and automation

Multiple sales pipelines, a product catalogue, sales goals, forecasting and a "rotten deals" flag for stalled opportunities are all listed. Workflows run on if-then rules, auto-assignment rules route leads by territory, and sales sequences automate a run of emails, calls and texts. Basic workflows are on Growth; sequences and territory management start on Pro.

Reports and admin controls

Standard, attribution, conversion and win-loss reports are included, along with custom reports. Enterprise adds audit logs, field-level permissions, custom modules and a sandbox for testing changes.

How much does Freshsales cost? Plans and pricing structure

Current prices appear in our comparison table. According to the Freshsales pricing page, there are three paid plans billed per user, with a discount for paying annually rather than monthly:

  • Growth: Kanban pipeline view, lifecycle stages, chat, email and phone, email templates, custom fields and basic workflows.
  • Pro: everything in Growth plus contact scoring, deal insights, custom sales activities, territory management and sales sequences.
  • Enterprise: everything in Pro plus forecasting insights, field-level permissions, custom modules, a sandbox and audit logs.

Add-ons available on every plan include Branded Documents for quotes and proposals and the Freddy AI Agent. The page describes a 21-day trial of the fully loaded CRM, after which you pick a plan and pay by card or your account is suspended. It does not show a free plan, which matters because several reviews still describe one.

Is Freshsales safe? Privacy and security

The Freshworks security page says customer data is encrypted at rest with 256-bit AES and in transit over TLS 1.2, and that the service runs in dedicated virtual private clouds with hardened routing rules. Access to production is role-based with two-factor authentication and audit trails, administrative access goes through a secured tunnel from whitelisted addresses, and malware and spam scanning is applied. Freshworks also describes near real-time backups in a separate availability zone, daily snapshots kept for seven days, multi-zone redundancy and round-the-clock security monitoring. The same page offers its certifications and attestations to customers completing a security review.

Inside the CRM, custom roles, record types, field permissions and audit logs let an admin control who sees what, though the finer controls sit on higher tiers.

Customer support

TechRadar reports that phone, email and chat support are available 24 hours a day on weekdays across plans, and that support is offered only in English. Business.com notes optional paid support plans with faster responses and technical account management. Freshworks also runs training, a community and a help centre, and the pricing page gives an email address for pre-sales questions.

What could be better

  • The key AI and selling tools are not on the entry plan. Contact scoring, deal insights, sequences and territory management start on Pro, so the Growth plan is closer to a well-organised contact and pipeline tool.
  • A smaller integration catalogue. The features page cites a marketplace of over 100 apps; TechRadar found the native list thin next to the largest CRMs and leaned on Zapier, Make and the API to fill gaps.
  • No permanently free plan on the current pricing page. Older reviews describing a free tier may be out of date.
  • Support hours. Weekday 24-hour coverage is good, but not the same as weekend support, and it is English only.

Getting started: what to set up first

Because the trial is time-limited, it pays to go in with a plan. Connect each rep's mailbox, configure one pipeline that mirrors your real deal stages, import a representative slice of your contacts, and set up calling with a number your customers will recognise. Then build one simple workflow, such as assigning new web-form leads to a rep and creating a follow-up task. If those basics feel natural to your team within the first week, the rest of the product is likely to stick.

Who should choose something else?

If you need a CRM that will stay free as you grow, look at options whose pricing pages still list a free edition. If your workflow depends on many specialist apps, a CRM with a larger native marketplace will mean less custom integration work. And if your sales process is simple enough to live in a shared inbox and a spreadsheet, a dedicated CRM may be more than you need for now.

Is Freshsales worth it? Bottom line

Freshsales is one of the easiest proper CRMs for a new sales team to adopt. Built-in calling and messaging, a tidy interface and useful AI scoring make it productive quickly, and the Freshdesk connection is a genuine advantage for teams that also run support. Budget for the Pro plan if you want the AI and sequencing tools that make it stand out, and check the current pricing page rather than relying on older articles about a free tier.

What other reviewers found

  • TechRadar rated Freshsales as intuitive and strong value, praising the customisable interface and built-in phone, but wanted faster support and more native integrations, and noted support is English only.
  • Business.com liked how much functionality fits into a relatively simple interface and how well it suits sales managers, but noted that advanced features sit on higher tiers, that Freddy AI usage is metered, and that there is no longer a free plan.
  • TechRepublic highlighted Freddy's contact scoring and the CPQ quoting tools, and suggested buyers wanting a richer free tier or more integrations compare alternatives.
  • TechRadar and TechRepublic both still describe a free plan for up to three users, which conflicts with the vendor's current pricing page and Business.com's more recent account.

Where they agree: every outlet likes the ease of use and built-in communication tools, and every outlet flags the integration catalogue or tier-locked features as the main limits. Where they differ: the outlets disagree on whether a free plan exists, and on how serious the integration gap is; TechRadar treats Zapier and the API as an adequate bridge, Business.com points heavy integrators to bigger platforms. What it means for you: trust the vendor's pricing page for what is included today, use the 21-day trial to connect your own email, phone and two or three must-have apps, and only then decide between Growth and Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Does Freshsales have a free plan?

Not on the current Freshsales pricing page, which lists only the Growth, Pro and Enterprise paid plans and a 21-day trial of the full CRM. Several older reviews describe a free plan for up to three users, and Business.com reports that Freshworks no longer offers it. Check the pricing page when you sign up, since plan line-ups can change.

Is Freshsales good for startups?

Yes, it is one of the easier CRMs for a young team to adopt. The interface is clean, email and calling are built in, and the Growth plan is aimed at startups and small businesses. Teams that want contact scoring, deal insights and automated sales sequences should plan for the Pro plan, because those tools are not included on Growth.

What is Freddy AI in Freshsales?

Freddy AI is Freshworks' artificial intelligence layer. In Freshsales it scores contacts using historical data, highlights deals worth prioritising, spots duplicate records and detects out-of-office replies. Contact scoring and deal insights start on the Pro plan, forecasting insights on Enterprise, and a customer-facing AI chatbot agent is a separately priced add-on.

Is Freshsales secure?

Freshworks says data is encrypted at rest with 256-bit AES and in transit with TLS 1.2, hosted in dedicated virtual private clouds, backed up to a separate availability zone and monitored around the clock. Staff access to production is role-based with two-factor authentication. Inside the CRM, admins can set custom roles and, on higher tiers, field-level permissions and audit logs.

Does Freshsales integrate with other apps?

Yes, through the Freshworks Marketplace, which the features page says offers over 100 apps, plus an API, webhooks and native Freshdesk sync. TechRadar notes that the native list is smaller than the biggest CRMs offer and that Zapier and Make connectors help fill the gaps. If you rely on a specific app, confirm it during the trial.
