Our verdict
This Foxit review covers Foxit eSign, the electronic signature service from the company best known for Foxit PDF Editor, and how it fits alongside that editor. The case for Foxit is simple: if your team already spends its day inside PDFs, you can prepare, edit, redact and send documents for signature from one vendor, with signing built into the desktop editor. Foxit eSign Business adds unlimited envelopes, bulk sending and a compliance toolkit that reaches into healthcare, finance and FDA-regulated work. It is less attractive for a single person who signs occasionally, and for buyers who want the most polished standalone signing experience regardless of PDF tools.
NerdBible has not tested Foxit eSign hands-on for this review. This is an editorial assessment based on Foxit's own pricing, feature and compliance pages, independent reviews of Foxit's software, and verified user ratings.
What is Foxit eSign and who is it for?
Foxit eSign was previously sold as eSign Genie, and several user review profiles still carry that name. Today it is sold in two ways: as a standalone signing service with its own plans, and as a feature inside Foxit PDF Editor+, which includes a yearly allowance of envelopes. Foxit says paid plans include unlimited document storage, and that eSign is built into the PDF Editor so that any PDF can be turned into a signing request without switching tools.
The natural audience is document-heavy teams: legal, finance, HR, real estate, insurance and healthcare offices that already handle contracts, forms and records as PDFs. Foxit's industry pages lean into exactly those sectors, and its connector add-ons target HR, applicant tracking and cloud storage systems. Organisations that standardise on Foxit PDF Editor across many desktops get the strongest benefit, because licensing, deployment and signing can sit with a single supplier.
Key features
- Templates and workflows. Reusable templates for repeat agreements, signing order, workflow rules and tracking with reminders. Essentials includes a small template allowance; Business includes unlimited templates.
- Web forms. Business plans can publish signable web forms, so a client or applicant can fill and sign from a link on your site.
- Bulk sending and bulk signing. Send one document to many recipients, or sign many documents in one pass.
- In-person signing and wet signatures. For situations where a signer is at your desk, or a counterparty insists on ink, Foxit supports both alongside remote signing.
- Foxit Pay and on-demand notary. Foxit lists payment collection at signing and an online notary service among its eSign features.
- Signer AI. Foxit describes AI help for signers that explains what they are being asked to sign.
- Integrations. Business plans include connectors for Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Dynamics and Zapier, plus a dedicated Salesforce integration. Further connectors for HR and cloud storage are sold as an add-on, and an eSign API is available for embedding signing in your own software.
- PDF Editor integration. Inside Foxit PDF Editor you can prepare a document, place fields and send it, which is the main reason to choose Foxit over a signing-only rival.
The editor itself is a substantial product. Foxit PDF Editor covers editing, conversion, OCR, comparison, password protection and redaction, with PDF Editor+ adding AI-based Smart Redact and the bundled eSign allowance. It runs on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and the web.
How much does Foxit eSign cost?
Our page shows current prices from our own data. Here is how Foxit structures the plans.
- eSign Essentials: billed per user per year, for one dedicated user, with a yearly envelope allowance, a small number of templates, notary access, Foxit Pay and mobile signing.
- eSign Business: billed per user per year with a minimum of five licences. It adds unlimited envelopes and templates, custom branding, web forms, all integrations, advanced authentication, user management, delegation, and bulk sending and signing.
- Volume licensing: for sixteen or more licences, with volume discounts, a single renewal date and central license management, covering subscription and perpetual licences across Foxit's products.
- PDF Editor+ bundle: the editor's top tier includes eSign with a yearly envelope allowance and pooled eSign licensing.
Foxit offers a 14-day free trial of eSign Essentials and of PDF Editor+, and also advertises a free basic signing option. One point to watch: Foxit's pricing FAQ says the service does not rely on per-envelope pricing, yet Essentials and the PDF Editor+ bundle both list yearly envelope allowances. Only eSign Business is unlimited. Check which allowance applies before you buy.
Is Foxit eSign legally binding and compliant?
Foxit says its signatures are legally binding and that it aligns with major e-signature laws, listing ESIGN and UETA in the United States and eIDAS and GDPR in the EU. Signed documents include audit trails, signature certificates and tamper-evident protection. Foxit also notes, sensibly, that enforceability depends on the document type, the jurisdiction, the consent process and the level of identity verification, and it publishes a legality-by-country page. For specific legal questions, ask a lawyer in your jurisdiction.
The compliance module is where eSign Business stands out at its price point. Foxit's security and compliance page lists switchable compliance settings for HIPAA, FINRA, CCPA, FERPA, FDA 21 CFR Part 11, and eIDAS with GDPR. Signer authentication goes from email access, through multi-factor authentication by emailed or texted code, to knowledge-based authentication and qualified electronic signatures. QES works through an integration with ZealiD, and Foxit states that a separate paid ZealiD account is required. Foxit's industry pages also refer to SOC 2 Type 2 attested operations and SAML single sign-on.
Is Foxit safe?
Foxit describes eSign Business as built with encryption, access controls, audit logs and tamper-evident seals, and runs a public trust centre and security advisories page for its products. As with any vendor, the specific certifications you need should be confirmed against the trust centre and your contract, especially for regulated data. Healthcare buyers in particular should confirm the HIPAA arrangements in writing before sending protected health information.
One point about our own data: our listing describes an "on-prem option". Foxit does offer on-premise deployment for its Admin Console and its developer SDKs, and perpetual licences for the desktop editor, but its eSign plan and compliance pages describe a cloud service. Buyers who need e-signature hosted entirely on their own servers should ask Foxit directly rather than assume it.
What could be better
- Plan complexity. eSign is sold standalone, inside PDF Editor+, through volume licensing and through API plans. Working out which route is cheapest for your team takes effort.
- Envelope caps on the cheaper routes. Essentials and the PDF Editor+ bundle have yearly envelope allowances; only Business is unlimited, and Business requires at least five licences.
- Support consistency. Verified user reviews are broadly positive, but recent complaints describe long phone waits and slow follow-up on account issues.
- QES costs extra. Qualified signatures depend on a separate paid ZealiD account.
- Price on the high side for casual users. Independent reviewers rate the editor highly for business users but suggest occasional users look for something cheaper.
Who should choose something else?
If you only need to sign the occasional PDF, Foxit's free signing option or the tools already in your operating system may be enough. If you do not edit PDFs much and simply want the simplest signing service with unlimited users, a per-envelope provider such as Signable may cost less. If your organisation lives in Microsoft 365 or Adobe Document Cloud and needs FedRAMP authorisation, Adobe Acrobat Sign is the more established choice. And if you want a full contract lifecycle platform with clause libraries and negotiation, look at dedicated CLM software.
Is Foxit worth it?
For teams that already rely on a professional PDF editor, Foxit is a strong and coherent choice. You get a well-reviewed editor and a signing service that covers templates, web forms, bulk sending, payments and notarisation, with a compliance toolkit that reaches regulated industries. That combination is why we list it as our pick for a PDF suite with signing. It is not the cheapest route for a solo signer, the plan structure needs careful reading, and QES requires a third-party account. Start with the 14-day trial, ideally inside the PDF Editor your team will actually use.
What other reviewers found
- TechRadar's review of Foxit PDF Editor called it a great app for businesses that edit, redact and alter PDFs regularly, praising its OCR and redaction tools, but suggested casual users find something cheaper.
- In its best PDF editors guide, TechRadar ranked Foxit second overall, singling out its editing, OCR, redaction and eSign tools while calling the price slightly high.
- On Capterra, where Foxit eSign still appears under its eSign Genie history, verified users give it about 4.7 out of 5 across hundreds of reviews, praising templates and ease of use while some report inconsistent customer service.
- Info-Tech's SoftwareReviews gives Foxit eSign a composite score of 8.8 out of 10, with users rating it well for ease of use and branding but lower for ease of data integration.
The outlets agree that Foxit is easy to pick up and that its PDF tools are excellent, and that it is priced for businesses rather than individuals. They differ on support: specialist reviewers say little about it, while verified users split between praise and frustration with phone waits. They also differ on depth, because TechRadar reviews the editor with signing as one strength, while user platforms judge eSign on its own. For a buyer, that means Foxit makes most sense when you value the editor and the signing service together; if you only need signatures, compare it against signing specialists on support terms and envelope allowances.
Frequently asked questions
Is Foxit eSign the same as eSign Genie?
Yes. Foxit eSign was previously sold as eSign Genie, and some user review sites such as Capterra still list the product under the old name. Today it is sold as Foxit eSign Essentials and Foxit eSign Business, and is also built into Foxit PDF Editor+. Reviews filed under eSign Genie mostly describe the same core signing service before the rename.
Does Foxit eSign come with Foxit PDF Editor?
The top PDF Editor+ plan includes Foxit eSign with a yearly allowance of envelopes and pooled eSign licensing, so you can send documents for signature directly from the editor. The standard PDF Editor plan does not include that allowance. Teams that need unlimited sending, web forms and the full compliance module should look at eSign Business instead.
Is Foxit eSign legally binding?
Foxit says its electronic and digital signatures are legally binding and align with major laws including ESIGN, UETA, eIDAS and GDPR. Completed documents include an audit trail, a signature certificate and tamper-evident protection. Foxit also notes that enforceability depends on the document type, jurisdiction, consent and identity checks, so confirm the rules for your documents with a lawyer.
Does Foxit eSign support HIPAA and 21 CFR Part 11?
Foxit's compliance page lists HIPAA, FINRA, CCPA, FERPA and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 settings within eSign Business, along with multi-factor and knowledge-based signer authentication. These are features of the Business plan rather than Essentials. Regulated organisations should still confirm contractual terms, such as any business associate agreement for health data, with Foxit before going live.
Is there a free trial of Foxit eSign?
Yes. Foxit offers a 14-day free trial of eSign Essentials, and a separate 14-day trial of PDF Editor+, which includes eSign. Foxit also advertises a free basic signing option for individuals. The trial is the easiest way to check whether the templates, reminders and editor integration suit your team before committing to annual licences.
