When to use it
A generic currency sign from old character sets, used when the actual currency symbol was not available. It is rarely the right choice today; use the real sign or the ISO code such as EUR or USD.
The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.
Browsers also accept the legacy form ¤ without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
