Timestamp to date
Date to timestamp
Unix time counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 at midnight UTC, ignoring leap seconds. Time zone rules, including daylight saving changes, come from your browser's own time zone database.
How to use it
- Paste a Unix timestamp. Seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds are told apart by length, or choose the unit.
- Read the date in UTC, in your own time zone and in any time zone you pick.
- To go the other way, enter a date and time, say which time zone it is in, and copy the timestamp.
Questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. It is the same number everywhere in the world at a given moment, which is why software stores time this way.
Seconds or milliseconds?
Unix tools, PHP and most databases use seconds (10 digits today). JavaScript, Java and many APIs use milliseconds (13 digits). The tool detects which one you pasted by its length.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store the timestamp as a signed 32 bit number run out on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC, when the count passes 2,147,483,647. Modern systems use 64 bits and are fine.
Why does the same time give a different date in another zone?
The timestamp is one moment; the date and clock time depend on where you stand. Midnight UTC is still the previous evening in New York.
