When to use it
e with an acute accent, as in café and résumé. One of the Latin-1 letters named in HTML 4; on a UTF-8 page you can simply type the letter.
The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.
Browsers also accept the legacy form é without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
