When to use it
The backtick on its own. It needs no escaping in HTML, but it marks code spans in Markdown and template literals in JavaScript. It is not the accent on a letter: for è use the letter's own name.
The name comes from the HTML5 list (much of it shared with MathML), so it works in every current browser but not in XML or XHTML served as XML, where the numeric reference is the safe choice.
