When to use it

A raw > in text does not break HTML, but writing > keeps code samples symmetrical with < and avoids surprises in older tools. In XML it must be escaped where it would complete the sequence ]]>. Predefined in XML as well as HTML.

The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.

Browsers also accept the legacy form &GT without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
