When to use it
↖ writes U+2196 (North West Arrow), a symbol from the Unicode Arrows block, encoded since Unicode 1.1. Arrow shapes vary a lot between fonts; when an arrow is the only content of a link or button, give it a text label as well.
The name comes from the HTML5 list (much of it shared with MathML), so it works in every current browser but not in XML or XHTML served as XML, where the numeric reference is the safe choice.
This character also has an emoji form: ↖️ Up-left Arrow. Add U+FE0F after it for the emoji style or U+FE0E for the text style.
