When to use it
The German sharp s, as in Straße. The capital form U+1E9E has no entity name; write ẞ or use SS in capitals, both of which German rules allow.
The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.
Browsers also accept the legacy form ß without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
