Subscription Renewal Calculator

What a subscription really costs after the first year.

Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.

Payments are counted in the year they are charged. A yearly plan is paid in advance, so its whole renewal falls in the year it renews. Prices you enter stay on your device.

How to use it

  1. Enter what you pay for the first term, how long that term lasts, and the renewal price from the plan terms or your account page.
  2. Choose how many years to compare. Add up to two more plans to see them side by side.
  3. Read the year by year costs, the total and how much the price rises at renewal.

Questions

Where do I find the renewal price?

Usually in small print near the checkout button, in the terms of the offer, or in your account under billing or subscription. Many services also email a reminder before they renew.

Why is the first year so much cheaper?

Many subscriptions, especially antivirus, VPN and web hosting, sell the first term at a discount and renew automatically at the full price. The difference can be large, so compare the total over several years rather than the first payment.

Can I avoid paying the full renewal price?

Often. Turn off automatic renewal and see whether the service offers a discount to stay, contact support before the renewal date, or compare other providers. Check any refund window: some services refund a renewal if you ask within a set number of days.

About this tool

Why the first year is not the real price

Many subscriptions, particularly antivirus, VPNs and web hosting, sell the first term at a steep discount and then renew automatically at the full price. The headline figure on the sales page can be a fraction of what you pay from year two onward. This calculator lays out the real cost over the years you expect to keep the service.

How to use it

  • Enter what you pay for the first term and how long that term lasts.
  • Enter the renewal price, from the plan terms, the small print near the checkout button or your account's billing page.
  • Choose how many years to compare, and add up to two more plans to see them side by side.

The result shows the cost year by year, the total, and how much the price rises at renewal.

How payments are counted

Each payment is counted in the year it is charged. A yearly plan is paid in advance, so its whole renewal falls in the year it renews. That makes the year-two jump visible rather than spreading it out.

Comparing fairly

A plan with a cheaper first year can cost more over three years than one with a steady price. Comparing the total over the period you actually expect to use the service gives a clearer picture than the first-year price alone.
