Background Remover

Cut the subject out of a photo with an AI model that runs on your device.

Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.

The cut-out is made by U²-Net (u2netp, Apache 2.0), a small AI model that runs in your browser through ONNX Runtime Web (MIT). The first use downloads about 6.5 MB, then your browser keeps it. Hair and fine edges are approximate; for product shots the result is usually clean.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a photo with one clear subject.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the AI model finds the subject. The first time it also downloads the model.
  3. Pick a transparent, white or coloured background, soften the edge if needed, and download the PNG.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs there. Your photo never leaves your device.

Is it really free?

Yes, with no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many photos you process.

Why are the edges of hair not perfect?

The model is small so it runs quickly on phones. It handles clear outlines well; fine hair and transparent objects are harder. A dedicated photo editor or AI product photography tool gives finer control.

What format is the result?

A PNG, which keeps the transparency. Choose a white or coloured background if you need a JPG-style flat background instead.

About this tool

About the background remover

This tool cuts the main subject out of a photo and removes everything behind it. It is handy for product shots, profile pictures, stickers and slides where a busy background gets in the way.

How it works

The cut-out is made by U2-Net, a small AI model trained to find the main subject of a picture. The model runs inside your browser, so on first use it downloads about 6.5 MB, which your browser then keeps for next time. After that, each photo takes a few seconds, depending on your device.

  • Choose a transparent background for a PNG you can place on anything.
  • Choose white or a colour for a flat background, as many marketplaces ask for.
  • Soften the edge slightly if the outline looks too sharp.

Getting the best result

Photos with one clear subject and good contrast against the background work best. Products on a table, people against a wall and pets on a floor usually come out clean. Fine hair, fur and see-through objects such as glass are harder for a model this size, so expect to see some rough edges there.

There is no watermark and no limit on how many photos you process. Your photo is analysed on your own device and never uploaded.
