Image Redaction
Black out or blur parts of a screenshot.
Free. Runs in your browser: nothing you enter or open is uploaded.
Use a solid box for passwords, account numbers and anything sensitive. Blurred or pixelated text can sometimes be read back by software that guesses the original letters, especially for short numbers in a known font.
Drag across the image to cover an area. Each box is burned into the pixels straight away, so it cannot be lifted off the saved file.
Everything happens on a canvas in your browser. When you save, the image is encoded again from the redacted pixels, so the file has no hidden layers and none of the original metadata: no location, camera details or editing history. Check the saved file before you share it.
How to use it
- Choose, drop or paste a screenshot or photo.
- Pick a solid box, pixelate or blur, then drag over each part you want hidden. Undo removes the last one.
- Download the redacted image as PNG or JPG and look at it once more before you share it.
Questions
Can someone undo the redaction?
Not for solid boxes: the covered pixels are replaced in the saved file, and there is no layer underneath. Pixelation and blur also destroy detail, but text that is short and predictable, such as a card number, can sometimes be guessed back from what is left. Use solid boxes for anything sensitive.
Why not just draw a box in a document editor?
Shapes drawn over a PDF or a Word file are separate objects that can be moved or deleted, and the text underneath can often be copied. Here the image itself is changed.
Does it remove location and camera data too?
Yes. Saving creates a new image from the pixels, and the original metadata, including GPS position and phone model, is not copied.
Is my screenshot uploaded?
No. It is opened, edited and saved in your browser, which is the point of a redaction tool.
