When to use it
The micro sign is kept for compatibility with Latin-1. Unicode recommends the Greek small letter mu (μ, U+03BC) for the SI prefix in μm and μs; most fonts draw them identically, but software that does not normalise text treats them as different characters.
The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.
Browsers also accept the legacy form µ without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
