When to use it

The acute accent on its own as a spacing character. It is not an apostrophe and not a letter with an accent; for é use the letter's name, and for an apostrophe use ’.

The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.

Browsers also accept the legacy form &acute without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
