When to use it

The straight double quote. Escape it as " inside an attribute value that is wrapped in double quotes, for example title="Say "hi"". In ordinary text it needs no escaping. For typographic curly quotes in prose, use “ and ” instead.

The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.

Browsers also accept the legacy form &QUOT without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
