    Naming advice

    • Pick one spelling and keep it. Analytics treats Facebook, facebook and fb as three different sources.
    • Use lowercase and underscores or hyphens, never spaces. Spaces turn into %20 or + and make reports messy.
    • Medium is the type of traffic (cpc, email, social, paid_social, referral), source is where it came from (google, newsletter, linkedin). Google Analytics groups channels by these words, so standard mediums land in the right channel.
    • Campaign names should make sense in a year: product or offer and a date, such as winter_sale_2026_01.
    • Never put UTM tags on links inside your own site. They start a new session and overwrite where the visitor really came from.
    • Google Ads can tag clicks automatically with gclid. Keep auto-tagging on and add UTM tags only if another tool needs them.

    How to use it

    1. Paste the page address the link should open, then fill in source, medium and campaign, or choose a preset to fill source and medium for you.
    2. Add term, content or a campaign ID if you need to tell ads or links apart.
    3. Copy the finished link and use it in your ad, email or post. Check the messages under the link for anything that could split your reports.

    Questions

    What are UTM parameters?

Short tags added to the end of a link, such as utm_source=newsletter, that tell analytics tools like Google Analytics where a visitor came from. They do not change the page the link opens.

    Which UTM parameters are required?

Google Analytics needs utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to report a campaign properly. utm_term, utm_content and utm_id are optional.

    Do UTM tags affect SEO?

Not when they are used on links from ads, emails and social posts. Do not use them on internal links within your own site, and make sure your pages have a canonical tag so search engines index the address without the tags.

Will the link still work if the page already has a query string?

Yes. The builder keeps existing parameters and the part after #, replaces any UTM tags already in the address, and adds yours in the right place.
