UUID v7 Generator
Generate UUID v7 values that sort by creation time, and paste one in below to see when it was made.
Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.
Read the time inside a UUID v7 or ULID
The creation time is shown here.
Every ID is made in your browser with the Web Crypto random number generator. UUID v4 uses crypto.randomUUID where available. UUID v7 and ULID put the current time in milliseconds first, so they sort by creation time; IDs made in the same millisecond still sort in the order they were made.
How to use it
- Pick the type: UUID v4, UUID v7, ULID or NanoID.
- Set how many you need, up to 1,000, and the format options.
- Copy them all or download them as a text file.
Questions
What is UUID v7?
A UUID whose first 48 bits are a millisecond Unix timestamp, followed by random bits. It is defined in RFC 9562 and sorts by creation time.
Should I use UUID v7 or v4 for a primary key?
v7 usually suits primary keys better, because values arrive in order and keep indexes compact. Use v4 if the creation time must not be visible in the ID.
Can I get the timestamp from a UUID v7?
Yes. Paste it into the reader on this page and it shows the creation time in UTC and your local time.
About this tool
What makes UUID v7 different
UUID version 7 is defined in RFC 9562, published in 2024. The first 48 bits are the Unix time in milliseconds; the rest is random apart from the version and variant bits. Values made later always sort after earlier ones.
- Better database keys. Random v4 UUIDs land all over a B-tree index, which splits pages and slows inserts. v7 values arrive in order, so new rows go at the end.
- Still unique. Values made in the same millisecond take the next value of a 12 bit counter, so they still sort in the order they were made, and 62 random bits per value keep collisions vanishingly unlikely.
- Same format as any UUID. 36 characters with hyphens, so v7 fits existing UUID columns and libraries.
Things to know
A v7 reveals when it was created, to the millisecond, as the reader on this page shows. Use v4 where creation times should stay private, such as public account IDs. Generate up to 1,000 at once, in upper case or without hyphens if your system wants that, then copy or download them.
