QR codes are made in your browser with qrcode-generator by Kazuhiko Arase (MIT licence). They never expire and do not pass through any tracking link. QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE.

How to use it

  1. Choose what the code should hold: a link or text, a Wi-Fi login, a contact card, an email or a text message.
  2. Fill in the fields. The preview updates as you type; scan it with your phone camera to check it.
  3. Pick the size and colours, or tick Transparent background to place the code on your own design, then download a PNG for screens or an SVG for print.

Questions

Do phones need an app to scan a Wi-Fi QR code?

Usually not. The camera apps on current iPhones and most Android phones recognise Wi-Fi codes and offer to join. Some older Android phones need the QR scanner in their Wi-Fi settings or a scanning app.

Is it safe to put my Wi-Fi password in a QR code?

Anyone who scans it can see the password, just as if it were written on a card. Use it where you would be happy to hand the password out, ideally for a guest network.

Will the code stop working?

Not by itself. It stores your network name and password directly, with no link or account behind it, so it works until you change those details.

About this tool

How a Wi-Fi QR code works

The code holds your network details in a short standard text that phone cameras understand: the security type, the network name (SSID) and the password. Current iPhones and Android phones offer to join the network as soon as the camera sees it, with no typing.

  • Match the security type. Choose WPA for WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 networks, WEP only for very old routers, and None for an open network.
  • Hidden networks. Tick the hidden option if your router does not broadcast its name, so the phone knows to look for it.
  • Special characters in the name or password, such as a semicolon, colon or comma, are escaped for you.

Before you print it

The password sits in the code as plain text, so anyone who scans or photographs it can read it. For visitors, a separate guest network is the safer choice. The code never expires, because it contains the details themselves rather than a link; if you change the password, make a new code.

Scan the code with your own phone before printing to check it joins. Download PNG for printing on paper, or SVG for a sign at any size.
