Blur Part of an Image
Choose a photo or screenshot, then drag across each area you want blurred. Every blur is burned into the pixels.
Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.
Use a solid box for passwords, account numbers and anything sensitive. Blurred or pixelated text can sometimes be read back by software that guesses the original letters, especially for short numbers in a known font.
Drag across the image to cover an area. Each box is burned into the pixels straight away, so it cannot be lifted off the saved file.
Everything happens on a canvas in your browser. When you save, the image is encoded again from the redacted pixels, so the file has no hidden layers and none of the original metadata: no location, camera details or editing history. Check the saved file before you share it.
How to use it
- Choose, drop or paste a screenshot or photo.
- Pick a solid box, pixelate or blur, then drag over each part you want hidden. Undo removes the last one.
- Download the redacted image as PNG or JPG and look at it once more before you share it.
Questions
How do I blur part of a picture?
Choose the image, make sure Blur is selected, and drag across the area. Repeat for each area, then download the image.
Can a blurred area be unblurred?
The original pixels are not in the saved file, so there is nothing to lift off. Short, predictable text can sometimes be guessed back from a blur, though, so use a solid box for passwords and numbers.
Can I blur a whole photo?
Yes. Drag from one corner to the opposite corner to cover the entire image.
About this tool
How the blur works
Drag a box over a face, a number plate, a name or anything else, and that area is blurred straight away. Draw as many boxes as you need, undo the last one, or start again.
- Strength. The slider sets how strong the blur is. Raise it until the detail is gone, not just softened.
- Pixelate instead. Switch to pixelate for the blocky mosaic look, or to a solid box for complete cover.
- Burned in. The saved image has no layers, so the blur cannot be lifted off. Metadata such as location is also left out of the saved file.
Blur is not always enough
Blurred or pixelated text that is short and predictable, such as a card number, an account number or a password, can sometimes be guessed back by software that tries likely letters in a known font. For anything sensitive, use a solid box. Blur suits faces in a crowd, house numbers, car plates and cluttered backgrounds, where the aim is to stop casual recognition.
Save as PNG to keep screenshots crisp, or JPG for photos. Look at the result once more before you share it; nothing is uploaded at any point.
