When to use it

 is the line feed (U+000A). In HTML text it is ordinary whitespace; use <br> or CSS white-space: pre-line for a visible break. Written as inside an attribute such as title it gives a line break in the tooltip in current browsers.
The name comes from the HTML5 list (much of it shared with MathML), so it works in every current browser but not in XML or XHTML served as XML, where the numeric reference is the safe choice.
It has no visible shape of its own, which is why the box above shows it with a tinted background.
