When to use it
The obelus, the division sign on calculators and in school arithmetic. Technical and scientific writing uses a slash or a fraction instead, and ISO 80000-2 advises against the obelus for division.
The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.
Browsers also accept the legacy form ÷ without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
