When to use it

The fraction slash tells fonts that the digits around it form a fraction; some fonts then draw 1⁄2 as a proper fraction. It differs from the ordinary slash, which is also used for dates and paths.

The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.
