When to use it

The opening guillemet, the quotation mark in French, Russian, Spanish and many other languages: «texte». French typography adds a narrow no-break space inside the marks ( ). Not to be confused with the single angle quote ‹.

The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.

Browsers also accept the legacy form &laquo without a semicolon, for compatibility with old pages; new HTML should always end the reference with a semicolon.
