Text to Speech

Read text aloud with the voices built into your device.

Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.

There is no download button because browsers play this speech straight to your speakers and do not hand the audio to the page, so it cannot be saved as a file here. To keep a copy, use a sound recorder on your device while it plays.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Choose a voice, grouped by language, and set the speed, pitch and volume.
  3. Press Play. The word being spoken is highlighted where your browser supports it; Pause and Stop work at any time.

Questions

Where do the voices come from?

From your device and your browser. Most voices are built into the operating system and run offline. Some browsers also list online voices, which they supply themselves; with those, the text goes to the browser maker to be spoken. Either way, NerdBible receives nothing.

Why do I see different voices on another device?

Each operating system and browser ships its own set. Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone all differ, and you can usually add more voices in the system language or accessibility settings.

Can I download the speech as an MP3?

No. The browser speech feature plays the audio directly and does not give it to web pages, so no page can offer a download from it.

Why is the word highlighting missing?

Highlighting relies on the voice reporting each word as it speaks. Many built-in voices do, but some online voices and some browsers do not, so the text still plays without the marker.
