Word Document Cleaner
Remove author names, comments and tracked changes from a .docx before you send it.
Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.
What this document carries
What to clean
Accepting tracked changes keeps every insertion and removes every deletion, exactly as if you had pressed Accept All in Word, and switches Track Changes off. Read the cleaned copy before you send it: accepted changes may include edits you meant to reject. The tool does not touch the text you can see, images, headers, footers or styles, and it cannot remove names typed into the document itself. Keep your original.
How to use it
- Choose or drop a .docx file.
- Read what was found: the names in its properties, comments and their authors, tracked changes and who made them.
- Tick what to clean, then press Clean and download to save a cleaned copy next to your original.
Questions
What hidden information does a Word file carry?
The author and the person who last saved it, often a company name, editing time and dates, sometimes custom properties added by templates or document systems, every comment with its author, tracked changes with each editor's name and time, and session IDs that tie edits to the same editing session.
What does accepting tracked changes do here?
Insertions become ordinary text, deletions are removed, moved text stays only in its new place, formatting changes keep the new formatting, and deleted table rows and paragraph breaks are removed. Track Changes is switched off so the next edit is not tracked by surprise.
Will the cleaned file open in Word?
It should. Only the parts you tick are changed, every changed part is checked to be well formed XML before the file is saved, and the result is checked again after cleaning. If something looks wrong, keep using your original and accept changes in Word itself.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The .docx is unzipped, cleaned and zipped again in your browser. Nothing is sent to NerdBible or anyone else.
What about older .doc files?
Those use a different binary format that this tool cannot read. Open the file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, save it as .docx, then clean that copy.
About this tool
About the Word document cleaner
A Word file carries more than the text on the page. It records who wrote it and who last saved it, often a company name, every comment with its author, tracked changes with each editor's name and time, and IDs that link edits to editing sessions. Send a draft to a client or another firm and all of that goes with it.
See first, then clean
Open a .docx and the tool lists what it found: the names in the document properties, custom properties, comments and who wrote them, and how many insertions, deletions, moves and formatting changes are tracked and by whom. Then tick what to remove.
What it can remove
- Author, last modified by, company and manager.
- Other properties such as title, keywords, template and editing time.
- Custom properties added by templates and document systems.
- Comments, together with their markers in the text.
- Tracked changes, accepted as Word's Accept All would, with Track Changes switched off.
- Editing session IDs.
Every changed part is checked to be well formed before the cleaned copy is saved, and the copy is scanned again afterwards. The file is unzipped and rebuilt in your browser and is never uploaded. Older .doc files need saving as .docx first.
