PDF Metadata Editor

View and change title, author and other properties.

Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.

An empty field is removed from the file rather than saved as blank. Remove all metadata clears every document property and the XMP metadata stream. It does not touch the visible content, so names written on the pages themselves stay.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a PDF to see its title, author, dates and other properties.
  2. Edit any field, or empty it to remove it.
  3. Press Save changes and download, or Remove all metadata to strip every property at once.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The properties are read and rewritten by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to NerdBible or anyone else.

Why remove PDF metadata?

PDF properties often carry the name of the person who created the file, the company, the software used and when it was written. Removing them before you share a file means you only share what is on the pages.

What is XMP metadata?

A second copy of the properties, stored in a format many apps prefer. If it is left in place after you edit the normal properties, some readers keep showing the old values, so the tool removes it when you ask.

Why can I not edit an encrypted PDF?

Encrypted files store their properties in encrypted form, and changing them needs the password. Remove the protection in a PDF reader first and use that copy here.

About this tool

About the PDF metadata editor

Besides what is on its pages, every PDF carries document properties: a title, an author, a subject, keywords, the software that made it and when it was created and changed. These often reveal more than intended, such as a colleague's name, a company account or an old draft title.

What you can do

  • View every property as soon as you open the file.
  • Edit any field, for example to give a report a proper title that shows in browser tabs and search results.
  • Remove a field by emptying it; it is deleted from the file rather than saved as blank.
  • Remove all metadata in one click before sharing a document outside your organisation.

What is XMP?

Many PDFs hold a second copy of their properties in a format called XMP. If only the normal properties are edited, some readers keep showing the old values, so the tool clears the XMP stream as well when you ask it to remove everything.

What it does not touch

Text and images on the pages stay as they are, so a name printed in a footer remains. Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked in a PDF reader first.

The properties are read and rewritten by your browser; the file is never uploaded.
