No picture?

Captions use the classic heavy meme lettering with a black outline, drawn with fonts already on your device (Impact where it is installed, otherwise the heaviest similar font available), so it may look slightly different on a phone than on a computer. Only use images you have the right to share.

How to use it

  1. Pick Meme for captions on a picture, or Quote image for a quote set on a colour or a photo.
  2. Choose or drop an image, or start with a blank square.
  3. Type the top and bottom captions; long text wraps onto more lines by itself.
  4. Add extra text boxes if you need them and drag them into place on the picture.
  5. Pick JPG or PNG and press Download.
  6. For a quote image, type the quote and author, pick square, portrait, landscape or story size, choose colours or a background photo, and download it.

Questions

What size should a quote image be for Instagram?

Square 1080 by 1080 or portrait 1080 by 1350 for a feed post, and 1080 by 1920 for a story. All four sizes are one click away.

Can I use my own photo as the background?

Yes. Choose Use a photo as background, then darken it with the slider until the text is easy to read.

PNG or JPG?

PNG keeps text perfectly crisp on a plain background. JPG makes a smaller file and suits photo backgrounds.

About this tool

From words to a post

The quote is set in large type and sized to fit the image, so short lines stay bold and long passages still fit without spilling over the edges.

  • Sizes for each place. Square 1080 by 1080 for feeds, portrait 1080 by 1350 for a taller post, landscape 1200 by 675 for links and X, and story 1080 by 1920.
  • Lettering. Serif italic for a classic look, or sans bold for something plainer, centred or aligned left, with or without quote marks.
  • Colours. Pick any background and text colour, or start from one of the ready pairs, all chosen for strong contrast.
  • Your own photo. Use a photo as the background and darken it so the words stay readable.

Quoting fairly

Credit the person you are quoting, and check the quote is really theirs: misattributed lines spread quickly. Short quotations are widely shared, but song lyrics and long passages can be protected by copyright, so keep them brief. Use photos you took yourself or have permission to use. The image is made in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
