Random Number, Dice, Coin & Teams
Fair random numbers, letters, dice, coin flips, teams and Secret Santa.
Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.
Hand the device to each person in turn. They press their own name, read it, then press Hide before passing it on. Only one match is ever on screen.
Every result comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, with rejection sampling so no number is even slightly more likely than another. Nothing is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Pick a tab: Number, Dice, Coin, Letter, Teams or Secret Santa.
- Set the range, the dice and modifier, the number of coins, the letters, or the list of names.
- Press the button. Press it again for a fresh result; dice and coins keep a running record.
- For Secret Santa, add any pairs who should not draw each other, press Draw names, then pass the device round so each person reveals only their own match.
Questions
Is it truly random?
It uses the same cryptographic generator browsers use for security, and rejection sampling to keep every outcome equally likely. That is far more even than a typical simple random function.
What does No repeats do?
Each number or letter can come up only once, like drawing raffle tickets from a hat. You cannot ask for more than the range holds.
How does the ability score roll work?
It rolls four six-sided dice six times and drops the lowest die each time, the common way to roll character stats in tabletop role-playing games. Each line shows the three dice kept and the one dropped.
What does the dice modifier do?
It is added to the total of the dice, so 2d6 with a modifier of 3 gives a total between 5 and 15. Use a minus number to subtract.
How are teams made fair?
The names are shuffled, then dealt out one at a time like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one. With People per team, the tool works out how many teams are needed and no team goes over the size you set.
How does the Secret Santa draw keep it secret?
The whole draw is made at once in your browser, but the matches stay hidden. Each person presses their own name to see who they are buying for, then hides it again. There is no button that shows every match, so whoever runs it does not see the list either.
Can someone draw their own name in Secret Santa?
No. Nobody is ever given themselves, and pairs you list (such as couples) never draw each other in either direction. If the rules make a draw impossible, the tool tells you instead of breaking them.
About this tool
About the random picker
Six quick ways to let chance decide, each in its own tab.
- Number: one or more random numbers in any range. Tick No repeats to draw like raffle tickets from a hat.
- Dice: roll up to 20 dice at once, choosing d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100, with a modifier added to the total and a running record of rolls. One button rolls six ability scores the tabletop way: four six-sided dice, lowest dropped.
- Coin: flip one coin or hundreds and keep a running tally of heads and tails.
- Letter: random letters from the whole alphabet, vowels only or consonants only, in capitals, small letters or both.
- Teams: paste a list of names and split it into a number of teams, or into teams of a set size.
- Secret Santa: draw names so nobody gets themselves, with optional pairs such as couples who should not draw each other.
How fair is it?
Every result comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, the same source used for security keys. It is combined with rejection sampling: random values that would make some outcomes very slightly more likely than others are thrown away and drawn again, so there is no modulo bias.
Fair teams
Names are shuffled, then dealt out one at a time like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one. With a team size set, no team goes over it.
A Secret Santa nobody can peek at
The whole draw is made at once, but each match stays hidden. Pass the device round: each person presses their own name, reads who they are buying for and hides it again. There is no button that shows the full list, so the organiser can take part too. If your rules make a draw impossible, the tool says so instead of breaking them.
Nothing is sent anywhere; every result is made on your device.
