When to use it
An invisible break opportunity: a long URL or compound word can wrap there without a hyphen. The <wbr> element does the same job in HTML and is easier to see in source. Because it is invisible, it often causes puzzling bugs when it is pasted into code or passwords.
The name comes from the HTML5 list (much of it shared with MathML), so it works in every current browser but not in XML or XHTML served as XML, where the numeric reference is the safe choice.
It has no visible shape of its own, which is why the box above shows it with a tinted background.
