When to use it
The thinnest space, narrower than a thin space. Typesetters use it to add a hint of space around a dash or between nested quotes.
The name comes from the HTML5 list (much of it shared with MathML), so it works in every current browser but not in XML or XHTML served as XML, where the numeric reference is the safe choice.
It has no visible shape of its own, which is why the box above shows it with a tinted background.
