When to use it

Stops two letters from joining or forming a ligature without adding space. Persian needs it in many everyday words, and it is used in Indic scripts and in German for words where a ligature would cross a word boundary.

The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.

It has no visible shape of its own, which is why the box above shows it with a tinted background.
