When to use it

An invisible mark with left-to-right direction. It fixes the placement of punctuation and numbers at the edge of left-to-right text inside right-to-left text, for example an English name ending in an exclamation mark within Arabic. For whole phrases, the dir attribute or <bdi> is clearer.

The name dates from HTML 4, so it works in every browser and in old email clients.

It has no visible shape of its own, which is why the box above shows it with a tinted background.
