JPG to PNG Converter

Choose JPG or JPEG files and each one is saved as a PNG on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Free tools that run in your browser. Nothing you type, open or create is uploaded to NerdBible or anyone else.

Choose one or more images to start. Nothing is uploaded.

Same format compresses each image and keeps its type. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP to convert every image to that format instead. Up to 50 images at a time.

    How to use it

    1. Choose or drop one or more images.
    2. Keep Same format to make the files smaller, or choose JPG, PNG or WebP to convert them.
    3. Set the quality (70 to 80 suits photos) and, if you like, a max width: large photos shrink, smaller ones are never enlarged. For JPG, pick the colour that fills transparent areas; for SVG files, the width of the picture.
    4. Check the result for each file and download them one by one or all together.

    Questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. The PNG is an exact copy of the pixels in the JPG, including any compression artefacts. What PNG does is stop further loss: later edits and saves will not degrade it.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel of a photo in full, while JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices. A photo can easily be three to five times larger as PNG.

Does the PNG get a transparent background?

No. A JPG cannot hold transparency, so its background is solid and stays solid in the PNG. Remove the background with a separate tool if you need a cut-out.

    About this tool

What changes when a JPG becomes a PNG

PNG is a lossless format: once your picture is a PNG, saving it again, cropping it or editing it never adds new compression damage. That is the main reason to convert a JPG you plan to keep working on.

    • Detail already lost is not recovered. A JPG was compressed when it was saved, and converting it copies those pixels exactly, blocky areas included.
    • No transparency is created. A JPG has no transparent areas, so a white background stays white in the PNG. To cut out a background, use the background remover after converting.
    • The file gets bigger. Photos are usually several times larger as PNG, because PNG stores every pixel without the shortcuts JPG takes.

When PNG is the right choice

Convert when an upload form or app asks for PNG, when you will edit the image several times, or when it is a screenshot, diagram or logo with flat colour and sharp text. For a photo you only want to share, keep the JPG or convert to WebP for a smaller file.

The PNG is redrawn from the pixels, so location and camera details in the JPG are not copied across.
