Questions
Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Both formats support transparency, so transparent areas in the WebP stay transparent in the PNG.
Why will my computer not open WebP files?
WebP is newer than JPG and PNG, and some older programs and operating system versions do not read it. Converting to PNG gives you a file that practically every app opens.
What about animated WebP images?
Only the first frame is converted, giving a still PNG. This tool makes still images.
About this tool
Why WebP files need converting
Many websites serve their images as WebP because the files are small. Save one and you may find that an older photo editor, office program or upload form will not open it. PNG works almost everywhere.
- Transparency is kept. WebP and PNG can both hold transparent pixels, so a logo or cut-out keeps its clear background.
- Nothing more is lost. PNG is lossless, so the converted file holds exactly what the WebP showed. It cannot bring back detail the WebP had already dropped.
- Expect a larger file. WebP compresses far harder than PNG, especially for photos, so the PNG is often several times the size.
- Animated WebP becomes a still image of its first frame.
PNG or JPG?
Choose PNG for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with transparency or sharp text. For a photo you just want to open or share, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.
Only use images you have the right to reuse; converting a file does not change who owns it.
